location

The church is located in the middle of Hahn. The church is located at the confluence of Dorfstrasse and Hahner Strasse. The old rectory is located directly behind the choir.

history

A chapel in Hahn was first mentioned in 1261. This chapel was already dedicated to Mary, the Mother of God. In 1280 Johann von Frankenberg and his wife donated their land, meadow and forest tithes to the chapel. At the same time, the abbot of the imperial abbey Kornelimünster transferred a courtyard to the chapel so that a monk of the monastery could live there and work there in pastoral care. Until the abbey was dissolved in 1795, monks from Kornelimünster looked after the Hahn chapel community.

In 1804 Hahn was raised to an independent parish . Since then, Friesenrath has also been a branch of the parish.

In 1880 the old medieval church, which was elevated to a parish church in 1804, was demolished. By 1881, today's parish church was built according to plans by the Cologne diocesan master builder Vincenz Statz . In 1989 and 1990 the exterior of the church building was completely renovated.

Building description

St. Maria Sorrowful Mother is a three-aisled and three-bay hall church in the neo-Gothic style. The easted choir is closed on three sides and has one yoke. A star vault spans it . This is followed by the nave in the west . Both the central and side aisles are spanned by ribbed vaults. In the west is the retracted four-storey bell tower , which is crowned by an eight-sided tower dome.

Furnishing

Almost all of the furnishings from the time of construction have been preserved in the interior. Of these, the neo-Gothic wooden high altar , the wooden pulpit with depictions of the four evangelists, the pews and the stone stations of the cross are to be mentioned. The stained glass windows are works by Johannes Richstätter from 1957. The three windows in the choir show the Seven Sorrows of Mary .

Bells

There are three bronze bells from the 19th and 20th centuries in the belfry .
