Parish Church of St. Marien (Brandenburg)
City parish church St. Marien

The medieval town parish church Sankt Marien in Angermünde is the main Protestant church of the town. It was built in the 13th century from field stone blocks and was given its current appearance in the 15th and 16th centuries through brick-Gothic additions and modifications. The interior is characterized by neo-Gothic furnishings from 1868.

Building history

Experts suspect that there must have been a previous building, of which, however, no remains have been detected so far. They base their assumption on the fact that the city was founded in 1233, but the first construction phase was not completed until 1254. During this time the west building and the three-aisled nave of the Marienkirche with five bays made of hewn field stone were built. This first church building is clearly distinguishable for the observer from the later extensions. The building research suspects that this first building was completed by a straight choir to the east. He already had the sacristy on its north side. Dendrochronological examinations in the 21st century showed that the wood for the sacristy must have been felled around 1486 and for the beams above the nave around 1691. The extensions began in the 15th century. The west building was raised by two tower floors and, in conjunction with the stepped gables, reached a height of 53 meters. On the north side, the Marienkapelle , closed off with a brick Gothic stepped gable, was built in 1470 , which from the outside suggests a transept. The old nave was vaulted. The three-aisled hall church was supplemented from 1520 to 1526 by a new brick Gothic choir with a five-sided end and covered with a star vault. This was performed asymmetrically with two naves, the space of the north aisle is taken up by the sacristy, which was given a gallery. Both to the north and to the south, the eastern part of the Marienkirche projects over the building line of the narrower nave. The easternmost vault of the choir is polygonal and thus conceals part of the asymmetry of the building. The town church in Mittweida shows a similar choir solution . The interior of the church was decorated with frescoes in the 15th and 16th centuries , which were later whitewashed. At that time there were up to 17 side altars, a large triumphal cross with nine figures of saints and a Renaissance altar from around 1600 in the sacred building.

The Marienkirche was slightly rebuilt in the period after the Reformation in 1867 and completely restored according to the ideas of the time. The neo-Gothic interior décor from 1868, which was created in the course of this process and was then in shades of gray, was essential for today's image. Some of the late medieval frescoes and the color scheme from 1526 were exposed again during the renovation in 1976. In 1909 it was painted with gothic motifs; In 1911 the multi-lane donor windows made of lead glass were added in the choir. After the end of the Second World War , glaziers used the broken panes and formed a broken window from them, which is located on the south wall of the choir. In 1978 the community had the roof re-covered and the interior restored. At the end of the 20th century, she discovered that the roof structure, beams and facades were damaged, which was probably caused by insufficient water drainage from the roof. The wall crown and almost all beam heads were then replaced. The damage was repaired in several construction phases from 2002 to 2005. At the same time, restorers were able to secure and conserve the vine frieze on the eaves area of the choir in the east and south of the building. It probably dates from the 19th or the beginning of the 20th century. Experts suspect that the friezes in the Franciscan Church in Angermünde and Chorin were used as a model.

Furnishing

The altar of the Marienkirche comes from the refurbishment of the church interior from 1868 and shows the awakening of Lazarus based on models by Rubens. However, two altar panels from the old altar from 1601 are still preserved in the church. Several carved figures from this old altar are now in the Berlin City Museum . The bronze Gothic fifth from the middle of the 14th century has been preserved from the old furnishings . It is carried by three male figures and is decorated with 16 saints standing in arcades. The translation of the inscription reads: “Praise be to the name of our Almighty God, also through me, Joh. Justus”. Jupiter was the bell founder who had also made the Fifth. The baroque organ was created by the organ builder Joachim Wagner between 1742 and 1744. It has 30 registers and an accessory consisting of two cymbal stars , two trumpet players, two tremulants and two timpani. The organ consists of around 2000 pipes and was restored by the Schuke company from Potsdam between 1964 and 1976 (after changes to the layout by Carl August Buchholz in 1845) .

In addition to the choir windows already mentioned, there is another choir window at the western end of the nave with the city coat of arms and the date “26. April 1945 ”- the end of the Second World War in Angermünde. On the north side of the choir is a sandstone plaque with the family tree of Mayor Krummkrüger and his wife. She donated the Renaissance altar from 1600, of which only a few parts have survived. They are exhibited in the chapel. Two oil paintings hang on the north wall of the nave. They show Provost Sigmund Bärensprung and Provost Joachim Stegemann to the left.

In the southwest corner of the nave there is an oak box from the 13th century. Tradition has it that it was a treasure chest that was used to pay the ransom for Margrave Otto IV.
