St. Martin is the parish church of the Protestant parish Großbundenbach in the Rhineland-Palatinate district of Südwestpfalz . It is considered representative of a number of rural hall churches on the Sickinger Höhe . It was built after 1300 on the site of a Romanesque predecessor church, whereby the church tower was preserved.

The relatively high wall belt that originally surrounded the churchyard, as well as narrow window openings, suggest that this church was a fortified church . The embrasure in the churchyard wall, however, comes from the submerged Großbundenbach castle .

history

The first church in Großbundenbach was mentioned in documents as early as the 13th century. At the beginning of the 14th century this church was too small and was replaced by a larger one. A three-aisled pseudo - basilica was added to the Romanesque tower . The choir room in the tower also received a Gothic rib vault at that time .

architecture

St. Martin has a nave with three naves under one roof, so it is a pseudo-basilica. The nave is divided into four bays . The central nave is raised compared to the side aisles. The floor plan is irregular, the north aisle is narrower than the south. The central axis of the nave is shifted compared to the choir tower .

The strong buttresses on the southern outer wall are striking .

Furnishing

Inside the church has remarkable frescoes in the choir as well as some tombstones of the Großbundenbacher village nobility.
