St. Michael is located in the northwest suburbs of Minneapolis on the north bank of the Crow River , just before its confluence with the Mississippi . The city lies at 45 ° 12'36 "north latitude and 93 ° 39'54" west longitude and extends over 94.33 km², which is spread over 84.77 km² of land and 9.56 km² of water.

Neighboring towns to St. Michael are Albertville and Otsego (on the northern city limits), Rogers (12.2 km east), Hanover (on the southern city limits), Rockford (15.9 km south-southwest), Buffalo (18.4 km west ) and Monticello (17.8 km northwest).

Downtown Minneapolis is 30 miles to the southeast; downtown Saint Paul , the capital of Minnesota, is 41 miles in the same direction.

The main artery of road traffic through St. Michael is formed by Interstate 94 and the congruent US Highway 52 , the northwestern arterial road of the Twin Cities . The Minnesota State Route 242 is the feeder from the interstate to the city center. All other roads are subordinate routes as well as inner-city connecting roads.

A railway line of the BNSF Railway , the second largest railway company in the country, runs parallel to the I 94 .
