Parish Church of St. Michael

The Catholic parish church of St. Michael is a local church building in Neheim , a district of Arnsberg in the Hochsauerlandkreis ( North Rhine-Westphalia ).

History and architecture

The later parish of St. Michael was established in 1941 within the St. Johannes parish, whose membership increased to over 16,000 in 1950. It was thus the largest municipality in the Archdiocese of Paderborn . It was necessary to build another church. In 1953 the parish received the status of an independent parish. Between 2001 and 2012 the parishes of St. Michael and St. Franziskus formed the pastoral association Neheim-Ost. Since 2013 the church belongs to the parish of St. Johannes Baptist Neheim and Voßwinkel.

The building with a double tower facade was built in 1950/51 according to plans by the architect Josef Lucas . Above the rectangular portal , between the towers, the wall is divided by a round window and above it by five small arched windows. The crowning gable roof extends almost to the tent roofs of the towers. The tower heads are compact and structured by a different number of windows. The elongated nave is attached to the tower bar, it is also covered with a gable roof. The nave is complemented by narrow side aisles, which in the extension, to the side of the retracted choir , open into sacristies . The interior presents itself as a symmetrical, axially ordered church with six bays . The arcades are segmented arched. A flat wooden ceiling with rectangular fields was drawn in. In the rear tower there is a gallery on which the organ was built. The choir with a slightly curved ceiling is raised by five steps, the triumphal arch is designed like a segmental arch . The choir is illuminated on both sides through three windows. The mosaic picture on the back wall is a work by Benno Lippsmeier; it represents the Trinity . In 1980 Michael Winkelmann redesigned the liturgical arrangement.
