The Catholic parish church of St. Michael is a listed church building in Brakel , in the Höxter district ( North Rhine-Westphalia ). The community belongs to the oldest church community association in the former Prussian area, the community association of Catholic parishes Hochstift Paderborn. The association was founded in 1908.

History and architecture

In the 14th and 15th centuries, the parish priest was always a canon , so the church was of great importance for the diocese of Paderborn . During this time, the archdeacon's seat was also moved from the Iburg to Brakel.

A hall church was excavated in 1997 as a previous building . It was built in the 9th to 11th centuries with a retracted rectangular choir .

A cruciform vaulted basilica is the oldest part of the bound system , it dates from the second half of the 12th century and closes with a three-part relay choir. Instead of the Romanesque apse , a narrow choir bay was added in the 5/8 end before 1345 , the northern sacristy was added at the same time. After a fire in 1517, the southern side choir was redesigned to form a hall church together with the south aisle. The tower has been renovated. The upper floors of the tower were dismantled from 1846 to 1849 and the tower was rebuilt in 1852 according to plans by the builder Göken, including the old west wall. The sacristy was expanded around 1900 and 1927. The original basilica structure has been preserved on the northwest side with parts of the Romanesque base profile. The main view is characterized by the transverse gable facade. Slender stepped buttresses define the choir, they are adorned with finials, high tracery windows from 1898 structure the choir walls. The rib vaults in the choir rest over round templates. A waiting joint has been preserved on the southern stair tower . The tracery windows in the western transverse gables are partially blocked. The disc cross stone in the east wall of the south aisle is marked 1335. The groin vaults in the crossing rest on templates. The vaults in the central nave rest between the divider and shield arches, as well as belt arches on templates. The frame of the architectural elements is gray. It probably dates from the 16th century, it was renovated and expanded in 1969. A consecration cross was uncovered on the west wall of the former tower hall in 1969. The iron-studded door leaf of the pointed arch door to the sacristy was built in the 16th century. The sink niche in the sacristy has been preserved from the previous building from the middle of the 14th century.

On the outside in the south there is a stone cross from 1338 with an inscription and a stone lamp, both of which, like the church, are listed. A crucifixion group is exhibited in the cemetery .

Furnishing

The church has a rich baroque interior .

  • The stone high altar , a pilaster retable is raised by four steps. The reredos are built behind it. The tabernacle stands in the middle of the cafeteria and is crowned by a shell-shaped exposition for the monstrance. A figure of the Archangel Michael as a dragon slayer with a flaming sword rises above the tabernacle. In the left stop the angel holds a shield with the city arms. To the right and left of it are the figures of the apostles Peter and Paul on consoles. The upper part of the altar is a princely tent. In front of it, Mary is enthroned with the baby Jesus on a bank of clouds. The baby Jesus presents a rosary to Catherine of Siena. To the left of it the Domenicus kneels with the attribute of the dog with a torch in its snout. On the sides are figures of Saints James and John. The altar was donated in 1748 by Hofrat Johann von Pein and his wife; the donor's coat of arms with a band of inscriptions can be seen above the representation of Michael. It is attributed to Johann Philipp Pütt and his workshop.
  • The Johannes-Evangelist-Altar stands as a side altar in front of the northern choir pillar. It was donated by Consul Johannes Crux in 1769 according to the name in the chronogram. The structure is similar to that of the high altar. The central zone with Mary and the baby Jesus is framed by inclined pilasters. Mary stands on a crescent moon, the child has a globe in her hand. On the right and left are figures of Zacharias and Elisabeth. The figures of the apostle John and a small putto are shown on the gable extension. The rocaille volutes on the right and left are adorned with putti.
  • John the Baptist is the patron saint of the altar of the same name, it is characterized by its agitated form. In the middle is a figure of the Sacred Heart from more recent times. The excerpt shows the baptism of Jesus. The altar was donated by Johannes Crux in 1768.
  • The Anna Altar on the east wall of the south aisle. It shows classical influence and was built at the end of the 18th century. The three-part structure is strictly structured, it rises above a predella . St. Anne stands with an open book in her hand under a shell in the central niche. She teaches Mary. In the excerpt above is a figure of Johannes dT. Putti are sitting on the entablature, which is supported by three Corinthian columns. On the right and left on consoles of the predella there are figures of Margarte with the dragon and Catherine of Alexandria.
  • The fourteen-helper altar stands on the east wall of the north transept. It was built from stone in 1742 according to a name. The central relief is embedded between two inwardly curved pilasters. The Latin inscription in the cornice reads: These helpers are those who pray when fate is sad . The child Jesus sits in the middle of the relief in the lower third. Sitting on a cloud in blessing, it is surrounded by the fourteen helpers in need. St. Liborius sits crowning it on a bank of clouds above the cornice.
  • The 15th century sacrament niche is framed with tracery.
  • The baptismal font from the first half of the 17th century is decorated with scrollwork . It stands on a hexagonal base in the south aisle. The lid and the baptismal group are from more recent times. The version was renewed in 1953. In the 1960s, some figures were stolen and replaced with new ones.
  • The wooden pulpit hangs on the western pillar of the north transept; it was donated in 1622 by the Hatteisen patrician family. The figures of the evangelists sit in small aedicules on the pulpit. The sound cover is crowned with a figure of St. Michael. The pulpit was redesigned during a renovation in 1994.
  • A larger than life double Madonna is marked 1677 in the chronogram; it was rewritten in 1953.
  • The epitaph made of sandstone from Haxhausen is designated the 1580th It is decorated with figures and coats of arms.
  • The version of the cast iron tomb for Hermann Werner von der Asseburg († 1779) was uncovered and supplemented in 1999. The black marbled and figured sandstone stele is attributed to Joseph Stratmann.
  • Today's communion bench probably served as a barrier that separated the choir from the ship.

organ

An organ has been documented in Brakel since the 14th century. In 1558 a new organ was built. The wings of the instrument from 1558, painted on both sides, are L-shaped canvas paintings. They were painted by Gerhard Stratmann in 1585 and overpainted by Johann Georg Rudolphi in 1683. When open, they show the Annunciation to Mary and the Adoration of the Shepherds, when closed, the four evangelists in grisaille painting.

The organ was brought together, supplemented and renewed from 1975 to 1977 by the organ builder Siegfried Sauer (Ottbergen, Höxter). The instrument has 36 registers on three manuals and a pedal . 19 stops come from the previous organ by August Randebrock (Paderborn) from 1881. The old organ wings have been restored.
