St. Michael Church

The Catholic branch church of St. Michael in Hanfeld , a district of Starnberg in the Upper Bavarian district of the same name , was probably built as a choir tower church in the 14th century . The church houses permanent loan from the Diocese of Augsburg an altar from the early Renaissance .

history

The originally Gothic church was rebuilt several times between the 17th and 19th centuries and the church furnishings were renewed. In 1667 the ship , which then got its current length, was enlarged. As early as 1705 the windows were enlarged and more were created. In 1876 the roof was renewed, the nave was raised and the windows in their current size were broken through. A vestibule was added to the west. In 1892 the sacristy was added to the apex of the choir.

architecture

Bell tower

The church is a flat-roofed hall building , the ceiling of which is covered with simple, gray-framed field painting. A pointed arch opens the nave to the strongly drawn-in choir in the basement of the tower, spanned by a ribbed vault . The massive bell tower with a gable roof covered. The upper part of the tower with its ogival sound arcades was probably renewed around 1500.

Furnishing

  • To the left of the choir arch there is an originally late Baroque Madonna on a stone stele, which was given to a baby Jesus with a carved robe in the 19th century.
  • Two sculptures in the Nazarene style , a figure of Saint Joseph with baby Jesus and a figure of the Archangel Michael , are now in the anteroom.

Renaissance altar

Renaissance altar

The altarpiece is not part of the original church furnishings . It was given to the church by the diocese of Augsburg as a permanent loan. The year of origin 1536 can be read on the predella , the two coats of arms of the Lordship of Werdenberg and Zug refer to the origin of the altar in Switzerland. The founder, with his back to the viewer, and his family are depicted in prayer. A cross is painted over the heads of the family members who have already died. In the scene in the foreground you can see poor souls emerging from their graves trying to escape from two devils. Two angels, one with a flaming sword, another with a cross staff, come to their aid.

The Holy Trinity and Mary are depicted on the central panel of the altar . The dove of the Holy Spirit sits on Mary's head. Jesus and God the Father are wrapped in red cloaks, both holding world spheres with cross staff, which are supposed to distinguish them as world rulers. Seven putti heads soar above them in the clouds. At the right edge of the picture stands Christophorus , the patron saint of the founder, who carries the baby Jesus on his shoulders. In the smaller side panels there are figures of saints in painted niches with inscriptions above them. At the top left there is an angel, on the opposite panel on the right you can see John the Baptist with the Lamb of God . On the two lower panels the apostle Philip is shown on the left and the apostle James the Younger on the right.
