The Roman Catholic branch church of St. Nikolaus in the Bernstein district of the Upper Palatinate town of Windischeschenbach belongs to the parish community of St. Emmeram and Holy Spirit.

history

The church dates back to the 12th century and the considerable walls (up to 1½ m thick) indicate that it is essentially a Romanesque building. This church burned down in 1600. The subsequent choir with its cap vault comes from the late Gothic period . The church was built by the pastor of Windischeschenbach, pastor Dr. Georg Simon von Boslarn (1701–1714 pastor in Windischeschenbach), rebuilt and expanded.

In the middle of the 18th century, the Bernsteiners wanted to become an independent parish ; the Bernstein Church Foundation was then richly endowed with real estate. The reason for the request was that, because of the long way to Windischeschenbach, the sacraments of dying or the anointing of the sick could not be donated in time. Your request was made by the lawyer Dr. Schwab from Weiden in the Upper Palatinate is represented opposite the Episcopal Ordinariate of Regensburg . The Windischeschenbacher pastor Dr. Kilian Gottfried von Dürring spoke out against this plan, as did his successor in office Maximilian von Woitha . On May 18, 1761, the Ordinariate in Regensburg issued a negative decision. The dispute continued for years and only on August 1, 1765 was the final rejection. The Bernsteiner have after that in September 1774 troop network services for Emmeram Church denied because they had to do with the Nikolauskirche enough; but they were legally obliged to reimburse the costs of the day laborers who carried out this work.

Construction

The building is a hall church with a pitched roof . It has a three-sided closed choir with an integrated west tower, which is covered with an onion dome. In 1900 the added sacristy was expanded.

Interior

The baroque high altar with the image of St. Nikolaus received a carved antependium at the beginning of the 18th century ; next to it a baroque side altar with a representation of Mary of Victory and acanthus carving was purchased. The high altar was redesigned in 1877 and the altarpiece was repainted by the Amberg painter Ernstberger . In 1869 the two galleries in the interior of the church , which were perceived as unsuitable, were replaced by a new one, on which the new organ that was acquired in the same year was placed.

In 1922 a memorial plaque was erected for those who fell in the First World War . Under pastor Heinrich Kordick (1964–1977 pastor in Windischeschenbach) the interior was completely overhauled and the pulpit and gallery were newly gilded. Under him the old pews were also replaced, whereby the carved baroque cheeks were preserved. Under Pastor Franz Reich (1977–1990 pastor in Windischeschenbach) the renovation work was continued and a new Way of the Cross was acquired from Oberammergau . There are depictions of the four evangelists on the pulpit . In 1999, pastor Konrad Nesner carried out another interior renovation, during which the former blue sky with golden stars above the high altar was reconstructed true to the original.
