The Roman Catholic parish church of St. Oswald is a church hall of the rococo in the district Otterswang of Bad Schussenried in Upper Swabia district Biberach . It belongs to the pastoral care unit Bad Schussenried in the Biberach deanery of the Rottenburg-Stuttgart diocese .

History and architecture

The late Rococo village church and the rectory form a picturesque assembly. It was built in the years 1777–1779 by Jakob Emele on behalf of the Schussenried Abbey , to which it has been incorporated since 1423 . A restoration took place in the years 1970–1974. The rectangular hall, the longitudinal walls of which are slightly bulged on the two central axes, is connected to a retracted choir, which ends in a basket-arched end and is connected to an apse-like sacristy extension at the apex of the choir and a northern choir flank tower.

The exterior is effectively designed with a circumferential Tuscan pilaster structure and uniform arched windows, the tower with a deeply drawn-in, triple curved dome . The model of the pilgrimage church Steinhausen by Dominikus Zimmermann is recognizable in details such as the slightly protruding wall sections, the slightly curved volute gables , the decorative window crowns, in the design of the west portal and in the upturned cornices on the tower, but is cleared up in accordance with the later construction period modified, less decorative forms.

The bright, wide interior is also executed with less rich decorations and closes with stitch caps and barrel vaults over a pilaster structure. The restrained Rocailles stucco , mostly made of C-arcs, with isolated plait motifs was carried out by Franz Xaver Guhl, the frescoes from 1778 by Meinrad von Au . Scenes from the life of the patron saint of the church with the generosity and missionary virtues of St. Oswald are depicted on the ceiling mirror . A row of apostles with Salvator and Immaculate can be seen above the windows, the church fathers , four cardinal virtues and theological virtues in the choir on the vaulting . On the west wall is the vocation of Peter and the conversion of Paul, on the gallery parapet saints of the Premonstratensian order are depicted. The other canvas paintings were also created by von Au.

Furnishing

The flat niche architecture of the altars and the pulpit, like the rest of the cabinet-making work, was designed by Joseph Kopf in 1779. A crucifix for the former high altar was carved in 1709 by Johann Eucharius Hermann. The painful Mother of God was probably created by Franz Xaver Reusch based on the Steinbacher Pietà in 1779. The figures of Joseph von Arimathia and Nicodemus were made by Georg Anton Machein around 1730 , the tabernacle depicts the risen Christ from around 1765, who is attributed to Joachim Früholz. The stucco figures in the altar and pulpit are probably made by Guhl; a Madonna on the crescent moon from around 1490 is attributed to Ivo Strigel . The organ is a work by Rieger Orgelbau from 1979 with 15 stops on two manuals and a pedal .
