The parish church of St. Peter in Werl is a Roman Catholic church.

history

The church was planned by the Freiburg architect Gregor Schroeder and built according to his designs. It is located on Langenwiedenweg, which leads to the JVA Werl . Every prisoner who has to go to the prison or is released will inevitably pass the church. For this reason, a sword was placed over the head of the world judge above the two arched portals . It serves as a sign of the judge and his power . It was made from Anröchter natural stone based on a design by Fred Eckersdorf .

The parish of St. Peter was founded in 1942, around 6,500 people lived in the parish area. Bernhard Hellmann was the first pastor of the community . In 1949 the old pilgrimage church , which was in a poor state of construction, was refurbished as an emergency church in self-help . In 1950 the construction of the Josefhaus was finished, in whose hall the services were then held. After a few years, the church turned out to be too small, so from 1962 to 1963 it was extended by seven meters on each side in the transept and by three meters in the aisle.

description

The church was built in the style of a three-aisled Romanesque basilica in the form of the Greek Tau . The central nave is considerably wider than the side aisles. Attempts were made to realize the apostle Paul's idea of the mysterious body of the church.

Consecration

Altar and symbols

A large block of shell limestone core stone stands in the crossing . He should symbolize Christ. The rose windows in the transept are supposed to represent the outstretched arms of Jesus crucified, the rose windows in the two gables the stigmata. The nave symbolically represents the sacrificing Christ.

mosaic

On the wall of the east choir is a mosaic by Bernhard Gohla , which shows Christ as high priest , it is a counterpart to the world judge above the portal. The wounds are highlighted by thick rock crystals . The eyes give the impression of following the viewer, regardless of whether he is kneeling, standing or walking.

Mary is represented as Immaculata with the snake under her foot. There is a wreath of stars above her head. In her right hand she carries an olive branch, with her left she wards off all harm.

Bernhard von Clairvaux , a Marian admirer and church scholar, stands next to the Mother of God. He is shown with a beehive, as he is named in the church in the bronze cross with the cross relic as Doktor mellifluus - honey-flowing speaker and preacher . As the founder of several Cistercian monasteries and abbot of Clairvaux , he carries the abbot's staff.

The apostle Peter stands as the parish patron on Jesus' left. He holds the fishing net in his right hand and the key in his left hand.

Next to it is the favorite disciple, the Apostle John . He is carrying the book of the Gospels. Next to him is his evangelist symbol.

Tabernacle and Ambo

The tabernacle and ambo were made according to designs by Bernhard Gohla. The tabernacle is set in a decorated bronze stele . On the front it is shown how the exhausted Elijah is strengthened by an angel for his journey through the desert, on the back the burning bush in which God shows himself to Moses.

On the ambo one sees seven doves as symbols of the gifts of the Spirit of God.

Peter's reliquary

Heribert Cassau, a Paderborn art and goldsmith, worked the silver reliquary in the shape of a ship. Two nets with fish are applied in enamel work. Peter is enthroned on a large rock crystal. The shrine is richly set with semi-precious stones. On the front is the inscription: RELIQUIAE SANCTI PETRI APOSTOLI PA-TRONI HUIUS PAROCHIAE (Relic of St. Peter the Apostle, the patron of this parish; document of the Vatican dated April 10, 1960) . On the back is written VOS AUTEM GENUS ELECTUM REGALE SACERDOTIUM ("But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood." ( 1 Petr 2.9  EU ))
