St. Peter and Paul is a Roman Catholic parish church in the St. Georgen district of Freiburg im Breisgau . It belongs to the pastoral care unit St. Georgen Hexental of the Archdiocese of Freiburg .

history

As early as 1937 a new parish church was planned in the Freiburg district of Uffhausen, which had grown considerably due to a miners' settlement from the Schönberg ore mine . The Second World War prevented the realization. It was not until 1963 that the plans could be resumed. On November 6, 1968, Archbishop Hermann Schäufele separated Uffhausen from the parish of the old Hardkirche St. Georg and made it a separate parish Curatia St. Peter and Paul. The construction of the church began with the groundbreaking on March 10, 1967 and was consecrated on June 15, 1969 by Archbishop Schäufele.

Patronage

The patronage was taken over from the chapel Peter and Paul (Freiburg-Sankt Georgen) at the Uffholzer Kappellenwinkel , mentioned for the first time around 1360 in the Liber marcarum , a tithe register of the diocese of Constance , which is still easy to recognize by its windows.

Architecture and equipment

The architect of the Brutalist concrete building is Hans Günter Willmann. The church interior has a stylized, four-sided tent roof with wood paneling on the inside. The altar, which stands under the glazed top, is surrounded on three sides by the pews. The congregation is thus gathered around a table and looks at each other. This conception led Willmann to the words of Jesus I am among you when you are gathered in my name ( Matthew 18.20 EU ) and whoever hears my word and obeys it will live forever. ( John 5:24 EU ).

The two entrance doors are each dedicated to one of the two patron saints: the Peter door is on the northern side and the Paul door on the southern side. The sculptor Walter Haaf from Zell am Harmersbach was responsible for the design and execution .

The statues of Peter and Paul were given to the church in 1989 by the Church of St. Cyriakus and Perpetua , the statue of the Virgin Mary was made by Johannes Fischedick from Bottrop (1908–1984).

The square bell tower with a flat roof is designed as a campanile separated from the main building . At its top there is a square clock face on each of the four sides.

organ

organ

An organ was not put into operation until 23 years after the church was consecrated in 1991 . The construction was preceded by an opinion-forming process within the community, which focused on the question of whether the investment in this instrument was justified in view of the need in the world. The organ was built by the organ construction company Göckel from Malsch near Heidelberg. It is a two-manual organ with 26  registers and 1796 pipes . The disposition is:
