General

The church stands on one of the oldest areas in the city, in Altenburg, but is mentioned as the last church of all the churches in the city. Saint Vitus is the patron of the church . The hill on which the Altenburg cemetery and church is located is said to be part of a Franconian castle mentioned in the late ninth century. With the construction of the castle , the castle complex slowly disappeared. Parts of the castle complex were converted into the monastery of St. Peter and Paul . It is unclear which of the buildings and walls still preserved in the Altenburg cemetery and the monastery were parts of the Franconian castle complex.

location

The church stands in the Altenburg cemetery, which is located on a spur hill between the rivers Saale and Klia . To the southeast is the monastery of St. Peter and Paul.

History and architecture

The first mention of St.Viti was only in a document in 1270 as a parish church . The previous parish church was the Church of St. Petri before it was converted by the Benedictines into the monastery of St. Peter and Paul. The church has a west transverse tower from the Romanesque period , the nave is more from the Baroque , probably a new building after it was destroyed during the Thirty Years War . The round-arched double arcade in the basement of the tower and the remains of Romanesque windows on the north side are still preserved from the Romanesque origins of the church . An extension of the building to the east probably took place during renovation work in the 13th century. Another extension to the east towards the end of the 17th century or the beginning of the 18th century. The church received its baroque interior, such as the pulpit , the altar , the confessional and the galleries . The confessional and the women's and noble seats were removed at the end of the 19th century. During a restoration from 1971 to 1972, the choir, upper and pupil galleries were removed.

Interior

The pulpit basket is carried by Simson with the donkey jaw, with which he killed 1000 Philistines ( Judges 15,14-17  EU ). Reliefs of Christ and the four evangelists adorn the parapet; Moses and John the Baptist are depicted at the pulpit rise . A dove as a symbol of the Holy Spirit hovers under the sound cover. Above the altar, which is dominated by King David and Nathan , is Christ with the victory flag. The organ was created by the organ builder Zacharias Thayßner from Merseburg and replaced in 1830 by a new building in which the external appearance was adopted.
