St. Vitus in Vestrup , Bakum parish , is a branch church of the Catholic parish of St. Johannes Baptist Bakum, which belongs to the Vechta deanery of the Münster diocese .

history

The parish Vestrup was before 1208 Bakum ( St. John Baptist ) abgepfarrt . The current church was built between 1770 and 1771 and consecrated in 1772 . It replaced a simple half-timbered church with a wooden bell tower . Demolition material from the Vechta Citadel, which was razed in 1769, was used for the construction . From 1853 to 1856 the church was enlarged by Josef Niehaus .

Building description

St. Vitus was originally a three-bay hall church in the late Baroque style made of red brick with arched windows and three-sided closure on the east side. During the expansion, a fourth yoke and the tower were added on the west side.

Furnishing

The pulpit from 1591 comes from the previous building of the St. Andrew's Church in Cloppenburg and is considered the oldest preserved pulpit in the former Niederstift Münster .

The high altar from around 1760, on which there are figures of the apostles Peter and Paul , which were probably made by Johann Heinrich König , was taken over from the church of the Citadel Vechta .
