St. Vitus is a Catholic parish church in Gempfing in the Donau-Ries district and in the diocese of Augsburg , which forms a picturesque church ensemble with the neighboring women's chapel.

location

The parish church is raised in the north of the village in an east-west direction, surrounded by a walled cemetery. In the axis of the parish church, offset a little to the south and in its east is the women's chapel, which is also east-west oriented.

history

When the Benedictine convent St. Walburg was founded in Eichstätt , the noble free Liutger (Leodegar) II from the Counts of Lechsgmünd and Graisbach transferred the re-establishment in 1035 Gempfing. The monastery that he (previously?) Founded in Gempfing himself was only in existence for a short time; Its church was consecrated by Eichstätt Bishop Gundekar II. In 1306, Count Berchtold von Lechsgemünd-Graisbach sold the bailiwick of Gempfing to the Benedictine nuns in Eichstätt. In 1310, Bavarian Duke Ludwig privileged the St. Walburg Monastery, so that it could only be prosecuted before a spiritual court, the Eichstätt Choir Court, because of the Gempfing property. The parish of Gempfing was incorporated into the monastery at the latest since 1324, so the monastery was entitled to the income. The monastery also acquired property and tithe rights in the Gempfing branches.

The St. Walburg Monastery remained in the " Hofmark Gempfing" until the secularization of 1805/06 and the transfer to Bavaria, and thus also had to bear the building load of the St. Vitus Church. For 1414 and 1419, for example, it is known that the vicar of the Gempfing monastery parish was sworn in at the Eichstätt monastery. On the other hand, the abbess went to Gempfing once a year until 1624 to hold the so-called Bauding ; She stayed at the Maierhof with her entourage.

Building history

From the 11th century church, which was probably a small three-aisled basilica , remains are still stuck in the nave walls of the current nave. A capital of this previous building is used today as a holy water font; Round pillars are walled up in the sign of the south portal. The unplastered tower made of dark-fired bricks with five round arch friezes per tower side and corner pilasters and a saddle roof was built in the early 14th century in place of the church tower mentioned in 1034 and built by the monastery donor. The choir and the western part of the nave are probably buildings from the first half of the 15th century.

The nave was raised in 1683. Soon afterwards, the interior was given a Baroque style . The "lively curved" west gable, today's south portal, the extension of the vestibule to the north and the sacristy with groin vault in the northern corner of the choir also date from the early 18th century .

Building description

The sign in the south-west of the church has a ribbed vault. The hall building is flat and has a double gallery in the west; the lower one was installed in 1769, the upper one in 1930. The nave has two arched windows to the north and three arched windows to the south. The retracted choir is closed on five sides and has a baroque ribbed vault . Stucco and frescoes date from 1867.

Furnishing

  • On the four-column high altar (around 1680; by Jakob Engel ?) There is a life-size figure of the patron saint in a round arch niche, flanked by the somewhat smaller figures of the Eichstatt diocesan saints Willibald and Walburga (again on the high altar since 1930); in the excerpt you can see the figure of Our Lady, above it St. George . Statuettes of the princes of the apostles Simon Peter and Paul, framed in black and gold, stand in side niches .
  • The four-columned side altars with figures of St. Joseph with the Jesusknaben (left altar) and the Mother of God with child (right altar) was created in 1697 by the sculptor Christian Handschuher , who moved from Gempfing to Eichstätt ; the paintings come from the Eichstatt artist Johann Georg Frey.
  • The classicist pulpit was built around 1780/90. In the fields of the body you can see rosettes , on the cover there is a figure of Paul.
  • Other figures in the church are from the late 15th to the early 18th century.
  • The four-part organ front was carved around 1760/70. The organ was built in 1965 by Orgelbau Zeilhuber in Altstädten.
  • The choir stalls and confessionals were built around 1780.
  • The chair cheeks with their acanthus tendrils date from the end of the 17th century.
  • A Jurassic stone epitaph for pastor Johann Bischof from Greding with relief depictions and the coat of arms of the deceased is marked 1600. Other gravestones date from the 17th to 19th centuries.
  • The ceiling paintings in the nave with St. Augustine , St. Monika and St. Nicholas of Tolentino and the representation of the seven sacraments on the lower gallery parapet are from 1868.

Women's chapel

The women's chapel (cemetery chapel) in the east of the church was donated in 1411 by Rainer citizen Niklas Heyden. In essence, it dates back to the beginning of the 15th century, but was brought into its current form in the early 18th century and provided with a "graceful" roof turret. Among other things, it contains a Pietà from 1480/90. The upper floor was used as a granary in earlier times.

Others

  • A cross-shaped reliquary monstrance of the parish church contains a cross particle and twelve apostle relics.
  • The curate of St. Peter and Paul in Etting has always belonged to the parish .
  • Until the 19th century, a cemetery procession was held every Saturday.
