Steinfort Church

The Roman Catholic parish church of St. Walburga (also Église Sainte-Walburge , or Kierch vu Stengefort ) is located in the center of the municipality of Steinfort , canton Capellen ( Luxembourg ) belongs to the parish association Äischdall, the pastoral region of the south and thus to the deanery Käerch in the Archdiocese of Luxembourg . The patronage of Saint Walburga is celebrated on February 25th.

history

In a synod document of August 17, 1738, a chapel in Steinfort was reported for the first time. It was probably at the intersection of Arlonerstraße / Kiemweg. This chapel was demolished around 1830 when the new road from Steinfort to Arlon was built in 1830-1835.

In 1839 the pastoral affiliation Steinfort was transferred from the parish of Sterpenich to the parish in Hagen and from 1843 to 1845 a new, larger chapel was built, which was dedicated to Saint Walburga and a Saint Hauptert. By order of Bishop Adames on September 12, 1870, Steinfort was raised to a separate parish, which was confirmed by a grand ducal resolution of March 21, 1872.

As the number of inhabitants increased (over 1500 inhabitants around 1900), it was decided to build a church, which was planned in 1905 and built for around 100,000 francs by 1907 (architect: Jean-Pierre Knepper). The foundation stone was laid on May 17, 1906 by the then mayor Robert Collart. While construction was still going on, the entrepreneurs and hut owners ( Steinforter Hüttenwerk ) Robert and Jules Collart received permission to add their own chapel to the parish church with its own entrance to the church.

The church was on 16 November 1908 Bishop John Joseph Koppes inaugurated . From December 5th to 6th, 1925, a statue of St. Barbara was consecrated and in 1926, the then pastor Schons founded the Steinforter Caritaswerk . Until 1932, when the Steinfort ironworks were shut down, so-called Bärbel celebrations were held.

In 1966 the church was extensively renovated in accordance with the 2nd Vatican Council . In 1991 two statues of St. Walburga and St. Hauptert erected by the South Tyrolean sculptor Andreas Resch .

building

Outside

The church is a classicist stone building in neo-Gothic style that is freestanding on all sides and is about 29.30 meters long, 12 meters wide and 11 meters high, and the single nave nave has a steep gable roof . To the south there is a structurally lower, polygonal choir attached to the nave . The church tower, which is located to the north by the main entrance, is firmly connected to the building and measures around 44 meters. Above all, the distinctive light gray buttresses made of exposed sandstone and the sandstone frames of the pointed arch windows and the main portal with the rose window give the church a classic look. The access to the church is flanked by two stair towers with conical roofs.

Inside

The interior of the ship's church is visually divided by the six sandstone-framed stained glass windows. The main altar , the two side altars , both confessionals , sermon chair, benches and the mission cross come from the old chapel. Many of the items newly acquired at the time were donated or provided by the Collart family (e.g. pulpit , monstrance , chalices and candelabra , vestments, etc.).

An organ from the Gebrüder Müller organ building workshop in Reifferscheid (1898) was replaced in 1961 by one from the "Manufacture d'orgues Georg Haupt " from Lintgen .

Bells

There are three bells in the church tower that were raised in 1907. These were cast by the bell foundry Petit & Gebr. Edelbrock from Gescher . The largest bell, the Marienglocke , has a diameter of 118 cm and a height of 95 cm and a weight of 980 kilograms. She is in tune with the Fa (see: Solmization ). The middle bell, Karolusglocke ( Karl Borromäus ), has a diameter of 103 cm, a height of 87 cm and weighs 680 kg. She is in tune with the Sol tone . According to the inscription, both bells were donated by Charles and Jules Collart (Steinforter Hüttenwerk). The smallest bell, Julius bell (Pope Julius I. ) has a diameter of 92 cm and a height of 75 cm, and weighs 450 kg. She is tuned to the tone La . This bell was donated by Jules and Louise Collart.
