The St Patrick's Athletic Football Club (also: the Pats , St Pats , Irish : Cumann Peile Lúthchleas Phádraig Naofa ) is a football club founded in 1929 from the Inchicore district of the Irish capital Dublin .

history

In the years following its inception, the Pats dominated the Leinster League , eventually joining the League of Ireland in 1951. The first ten years in the league became the team's golden decade ; in the debut season immediately won the championship. This could be repeated in 1955 and 1956; In 1961 they finished second again. St Patrick's Athletic was also three times in the cup final. The first one in 1954 they lost 1-0 to Drumcondra , but the 1959 and 1961 could both be won.

This was followed by a long dry spell in which the Pats did not achieve anything in the league or in the cup competitions; Although the Pats were in the finals of the Irish Cup in 1967, 1974 and 1980, and in 1980 they also played in the League Cup finals, but they all lost these finals.

In 1986, the future Irish national coach Brian Kerr took over responsibility for the team. He led her to the top of the league for the next eleven years, during which he remained her coach. In 1988 they had to admit defeat to Dundalk FC in the battle for the championship on the last day of the match . Two years later, in 1990, they won their first national title in 34 years. The turn of the millennium eventually became the second golden decade of St Patrick's Athletic; in the four years between 1995 and 1999 they won three of four championships.

2001/02 they ended the season as the first in the table, but the title was withdrawn due to the use of non-eligible players. Nevertheless, the beginning of the new millennium was successful with the first two titles in the League Cup in 2001 and 2003. In 2006, after reaching the final of the Irish Cup, the club again had the chance of a major title, but failed after a temporary lead with 3: 4 at Derry City .

Internationally, the club was almost always eliminated in the qualification phases. In qualifying for the 2008/09 UEFA Cup , the club moved into the main round of the UEFA Cup for the first time after defeating Olimps Riga (LAT) and IF Elfsborg (SWE) in the first two qualifying rounds . In the first main round, St Patrick's Athletic lost with an aggregate result of 0: 2 against Hertha BSC . The Pats prevailed in the 2009/10 season in the qualifying round for the Europa League and were qualified for the main round, in which they were eliminated. In the 2012/13 season, the Pats met Hannover 96 in the third qualifying round for the Europa League , against which they first lost 3-0 at home and then 2-0 away and were therefore eliminated from the competition.
