history

The stadium was built in 1932 by Benito Mussolini on behalf of the fascist regime and opened by himself. At the beginning it was called Stadio Littorio . Since the inauguration, the Salernitana Calcio (back then as Unione Sportiva Salernitana Fascista ) played in the sports facility. After the end of the dictatorship and the Second World War , the facility was named Stadio Comunale ( German municipal stadium ). In 1947, the managed US Salernitana made it into the Serie A . After the season 1947/48 , the club rose just one point adrift of Roma back into the Serie B from. It was the only first division season that Salernitana played in this stadium. In 1950 the stadium was renamed Stadio Casalbore in honor of the Salerno-born journalist Renato Casalbore . Casalbore was killed in the Superga plane crash on May 4, 1949. Only five years later the name changed again. The stadium was named after the founder and first club president Donato Vestuti.

The by Nanni Loy twisted and 1962 for two Oscars nominated film Le quattro giornate di Napoli ( German  The four days of Naples ) played in Naples, but parts of the movie were filmed in Salerno. The scenes were not created in what was then the Stadio del Vomero in Naples , but in the Salerno stadium. On April 28, 1963, there was a tragic accident. During the game US Salernitana against Potenza SC, there were riots between fans and the police. As a result, a police officer fired a warning shot in the air. The bullet hit 48-year-old Giuseppe Plaitano. The Salernitana fan was the father of four children. First, however, the cause of death was given as a heart attack or a dented chest . In 1978 a fan group of the club named itself after the killed fan. The former marine Giuseppe Plaitano was the first person to be killed in an Italian stadium.

After 58 years, the time of the Salernitana Calcio in the Stadio Donato Vestuti came to an end because it was too small and out of date with its capacity. After construction of a new stadium began in 1984, the Stadio Arechi opened in September 1990. To this day, the old stadium has been used by teams from the city in a variety of sports such as rugby , American football , baseball , softball and athletics . Currently, the city's amateur soccer teams, the women's team from the Salernitana Calcio and the American football team from the Eagles Salerno are based there; in addition, athletics is still practiced today.
