The Stadtbad Kleine Flurstraße (also known as Barmer Badeanstalt or Barmer Stadtbad ) is a preserved historical city bath in the Wuppertal district of Barmen (house address Kleine Flurstraße 5 ). The building is registered as a monument in the list of monuments of the city of Wuppertal.

The building is one of the oldest indoor swimming pools in Germany. The building is used today as a restaurant , known as the “ Wuppertaler Brauhaus ”.

description

The former “Barmer Stadtbad” had a structured brick facade . The entrance was on the eastern side, which is flanked by three-storey protruding corner towers with continuous parapet friezes. The entrance itself consists of a three-axis facade with round arches on natural stone pillars and pillar templates with composite capitals . The two corner towers had flat tent roofs with protruding eaves . Pilaster strips and profiled headbands can be found all over the building, as are numerous arched windows. In the east part of the entrance there was also the administrative area on the ground floor and one apartment each on the first and second floors. Inside there is a gallery on the first and second floors around the men's central bathing pool . The men's changing rooms were accessible from the gallery. The tub section was on the south side on the first floor. The personnel, storage and machine rooms were on the north side of the ground floor. The medical department with plunge pool, massage and relaxation rooms was also located on the upper floors on the northern side. The bathing pool itself had rounded corners. The western side of the building, where the main entrance is today, had a polygonal apse . The women's semi-circular bathing pool was located here with the changing area on the first floor. The main roof is designed as a gable roof .

The exterior and interior of the building have largely been preserved in their original state and bear witness to the high-quality architecture of the early indoor swimming pool construction.

history

From 1881 to 1882 the “Barmer Stadtbad” was built as one of the first indoor swimming pools in Prussia in Barmen, then an independent town, and opened on July 19, 1882. Up to this point there were only five comparable institutions.

In addition to the Stadtbad Auf der Bleiche , it is the only public indoor swimming pool in the city that was built before the war and is still preserved today. On April 26, 1988 it was recognized as a monument. It was closed as a swimming pool on June 30, 1993 due to a lack of profitability.

After extensive renovation work, the Wuppertal brewery was opened here on June 11, 1997. The investment in the conversion was ten million DM.

Todays use

Wuppertal brewery
The two beer brands, also available in bottles in stores

The Wuppertaler Brauhaus GmbH opened a brewery in this building in 1997 . Since they also brew their own beer , they are the only brewery in town today . The two brands "Wupper Hell" and "Wupper Dunkel" are brewed and served. Up to 48,000 liters of these are stored. The beers are also sold in local shops as swing top bottles .

According to the company, “the largest bar in Wuppertal” is located on the approximately 2000 m² area of the brewery. This counter is located in the former men's pool. A model of the Wuppertal suspension railway was hung above it . Numerous paper mache figures showing guests bathing at the turn of the century complement the interior.

In summer, open bar areas are used in the west and north.
