Historic library building on Berliner Strasse

The Jewish orphanage on Berliner Str. 121

Some of the library locations are in buildings of historical value. For example, a former Jewish orphanage on Berliner Strasse in the Pankow district of the same name houses the Janusz Korczak library. The neo-baroque building was designed by the architect Alexander Beer , who was murdered in the concentration camp in 1944 . The building was built in 1912/13 and used as an orphanage at the same time until it was closed by the Nazi regime in 1942. After the house was used by various institutions and owners, it finally stood until it was bought by the Dr. Walter and Margarete Cajewitz Foundation empty. The foundation renovated the dilapidated building and has rented part of the building to the Janusz Korczak Library since 2001. In addition to the library, the building also houses a school.

Events of the city library

Numerous projects, events and readings take place at regular intervals in the various library locations that are spread across the entire Pankow district. The most popular recurring events for the younger target group include:

  • Instrument carousel in the Karow district library
  • Puppet theater in the Wolfdiedrich Schnurre Library
  • Cooding in the Kurt Tucholsky Library
  • Picture book cinema in several library locations.

Both older target groups like the following projects:

  • Writing workshop for adults in the Heinrich Böll Library
  • The online loan specifically in the Janus Korczak Library
  • Welcome tour (offered in two languages)
  • Author readings at various locations.

All offers of the Pankow City Library can be viewed on the Pankow City Library website.

Projects

From 2011 to 2012 the library at the water tower was rebuilt and renovated. New rooms and a library offer for young families, especially for children and young people, were created. The core of the project was the expansion of the children's area by a project room with an “Internet island” and space for group work and events, as well as the establishment of a new, dedicated area with a completely new media portfolio, especially for young people. Furthermore, the library now offers a considerably larger range of work opportunities on site. The renovation of the library at the water tower was made possible by funding from the Libraries in the District (BIST) program of the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).
