history

Steglitz

As early as 1896, books were collected for a "Steglitz reading circle" in the "Schwendy" bookbindery at Schloßstraße 65 and in 1899 the first library was able to move into rooms at Schloßstraße 33. Under the influence of the reading hall movement at that time , the “United People's Library” was created in 1900 with 4,200 volumes, which in 1912 already comprised 12,000 volumes and was initially moved to Schloßstraße 36 and in 1918 to Lyceum Rothenburgstraße 18.

At the same time, the Zehlendorfer “Volksbücherei” opened in Zehlendorf on March 1st, 1893 and in Lankwitz and Lichterfelde the “Volksbücherei zu Lichterfelde Ost” was created in 1904 at Jungfernstieg 29, in 1905 a library in Südende and the “Volksbücherei des Westens”. After the founding of Greater Berlin in 1920, the Steglitz district office took over the library that had emerged from the reading hall and had meanwhile moved to an outbuilding of the former “Frau Gunkel Higher Girls' School” at 2 Grunewaldstrasse . Together with the Lichterfelde-Ost and Lankwitz libraries, the "Stadtbücherei Steglitz" was created in 1921 under the direction of Hans Rothardt. In 1930 the city library had more than 35,000 volumes. In 1924 the children's reading room was added, which from 1928 onwards used rooms in Flemmingstrasse.

After the National Socialists came to power , the library manager Dr. Rothardt retired. In the library, now called “Volksbücherei Steglitz”, unwanted literature was sorted out and replaced by “ National Socialist literature ”. After the end of the war, the stocks were "cleaned up" and the old stocks and the stocks previously stored in the "poison cabinet" made available again.

As part of a ten-year plan for libraries decided in 1956, the new city library with adult, youth and music library at Grunewaldstrasse 2 was opened on October 1, 1958. The library was created in 1956 and received its first bus in 1961. The new building in Bruchwitzstrasse was built in Lankwitz in 1965. There were many savings, closings and mergers in the 1980s. The Faradayweg and Argentinische Allee branches of the Zehlendorf City Library and the Ringstrasse branch in Lichterfelde were closed. In 1991 the "Ingeborg Drewitz Library" was given its current name.

On September 4, 2006, the new district central library opened in the newly built shopping center Das Schloss , which was built on the site of the old library, with a total area of 5000 m². The integration of the library into the building was an integral part of the planning. After completion, the district bought the library floor on the 3rd floor back from the client.

Zehlendorf

The Zehlendorfer “Volksbücherei” opened in 1893 with a stock of 205 books and was initially housed in the teacher's apartment of the local community school. In 1925 the Zehlendorf district took over the library, expanded it to include additional branches in Dahlem and Wannsee, and in 1935 set up the main library in the former Scharfe'sche Villa at Teltower Damm 10 with 25,000 volumes, which today houses the registry office . In 1937, the "traveling library" was the forerunner of today's mobile library. After the end of the war, the adult department moved into the Zehlendorf town hall on Teltower Damm. The new building of the city library on Nentershäuser Platz was opened in 1962 and still houses the children's and youth library, the adult library and the mobile library with its two book buses on 1200 m² of usable space.

Lankwitz

On October 6, 1912, the Lankwitz “Volksbibliothek” with 300 volumes opened in an extension of the 2nd community school, today's Paul Schneider Primary School. After the founding of the Steglitz district in 1921, the library, which had been managed by the Lankwitz local association, was taken over as a branch in the Steglitz city library with 3,000 volumes. After several changes of location, a suitable place was finally found in 1935 in the former Ratskeller of the Lankwitz town hall. What was new was a reading room with newspapers. A few weeks after the end of the war, the largely undamaged library was reopened. The new library building on Bruchwitzstrasse was opened on January 4, 1965 with 14,000 volumes in the adult and 6,000 in the youth department, where it still exists today.

Mobile library

In order to supply the residents of the outskirts of the Zehlendorf district, a “traveling library” was already on the way in the 1930s as a forerunner of today's mobile libraries. It consisted of a car that made several stops. The first book bus in Zehlendorf - the first in Berlin - ran from December 1956 to 1965 and was then replaced by a larger vehicle that could hold 3500 media. In 1978 a second new bus was put into service, which served 16 stops with a total of 56 opening hours. The buses were replaced by a new acquisition in 1989 and 1993 respectively.

The Steglitz City Library used a semi-trailer truck for the mobile libraries, which was in use from October 1961 to December 1988 and made six stops. The second book bus went into service in September 1966 and was replaced by a new one in 1980. In 1999 the two mobile libraries merged and since then have jointly operated two buses that stop at stops in both districts and are stationed at the Gottfried Benn Library.

profile

The city library offers outdoor areas at all three locations. The Ingeborg-Drewitz-Bibliothek offers two outside areas, shielded from traffic noise, on the third floor near the busy Schloßstraße. The Gottfried Benn Library in Zehlendorf has a large reading oasis and the Lankwitz district library has a garden as a reading area.

Own editors select the new media to be acquired, adapted to the spectrum of the three libraries. Around 87% of new purchases come from local booksellers and from some online retailers.

The Music Competence Center in the Ingeborg Drewitz Library takes care of all questions and possibilities of music research in the network of Berlin's public libraries throughout Berlin. In the music area of the Ingeborg-Drewitz-Bibliothek, 35,000 sheet music for (almost) all instruments and scoring, study scores and piano reductions are available. The focus is on classical chamber and piano music, but there is also an extensive range of musical, rock and pop songbooks. There are also almost 10,000 books on music topics.
