history

Foundation and First World War (1896 to 1918)

Seal of the Oberrealschule zu Steglitz

Before 1920, today's district of Berlin-Steglitz was an independent municipality. Since 1870, the development of the Berlin suburbs and the establishment of the villa colonies in Südende , Dahlem and Lichterfelde led to a rapid increase in the population. Previously there were only a few schools in the community of Steglitz; in 1896 the first grammar school, the Steglitz grammar school, was founded. In 1896, today's Hermann-Ehlers-Gymnasium was founded under the name Realschule Steglitz and moved into a school building on Florastraße . The first director was Dr. Oskar Lüdeke, who had previously taught at the Steglitz grammar school from 1886 to 1896. The first school leaving exams were taken around Easter 1898. As early as 1902, it was decided to upgrade the Realschule to become an Oberrealschule. Latin was still not taught at the school, as was customary in higher schools that allowed students to study. With the acquisition of a school-leaving certificate (i.e. a diploma) at a secondary school, one was still entitled to study certain subjects. From 1900 the restrictions on certain subjects were lifted and one could study all subjects with the acquisition of a school-leaving certificate.

In November 1903 around 500 pupils were already attending the school. Therefore it was decided to increase the capacity with an extension. In February 1904 it was decided to build a larger school building on Elisenstrasse . The foundation stone was laid in June 1905, and in October 1905 the students moved into the new building. The old building at Florastraße 13 continued to be used as a school. At the time of National Socialism, it housed a business school, and since 1999 the old building has been the seat of the Upper School Office Management 1 . The inauguration of the new school building took place on October 28, 1905.

Since moving to the new building, a large number of associations have been founded. In September 1907 the gymnastics club of the upper secondary school Steglitz was founded, in October 1907 the rowing association of the upper secondary school Steglitz . In 1909 the old man's association of the gymnastics club of the upper secondary school in Steglitz and in 1913 the first alumni association, the association of former Steglitz high school students, VESTOR 1913 e. V. founded. In 1921 the Association of Friends of the Upper Secondary School Steglitz was founded.

From 1914 to 1918, as at most other schools during the First World War, there was a voluntary opportunity to take an emergency maturity test in order to be able to enter the military earlier. Nothing is known about the exact number of students who made use of it and about the number of losses at the Oberrealschule Steglitz.

Weimar Period (1919 to 1933)

In 1921 Dr. Georg Pann new director of the school. In the same year he applied to teach Latin at the school. For the school year 1924/1925, Latin lessons were introduced from the lower secondary level. The school was renamed Reform Realgymnasiums . From 1928 the school was called Oberrealschule together with Reform Realgymnasium Steglitz . In the same year a wing was added to the school building.

National Socialism and the Post-War Period (1933 to 1954)

Little is known about changes in everyday life at the Hermann-Ehlers-Gymnasium during National Socialism. In 1938 the educational institution was renamed the Wrangel School, named after the old General Wrangel , who had the rebels of the Berlin Revolution of 1848 cartat down. Now you noticed in music lessons where and how the music was playing. We sang 'Flamme up', 'Auf, heben our flags' and the first songs by the Hitler Youth songwriter Hans Baumann , 'And die Morgenfrühe' and 'Only freedom belongs to our life'. These songs were also necessary, because from now on there were also appeals in the school on the special political holidays . At the time of the air raids on Berlin, many children were sent to the country . During the so-called Lankwitz bombing night on the night of August 23rd to 24th, 1943, the school building burned down almost completely as a result of a bomb attack. The educational facility was evacuated to the so-called Wartheland as part of the expanded KLV , with all teachers and all important school furniture . Lessons only started more than two months after the end of the war, in July 1945. As part of the introduction of co-education in Germany, girls were also admitted to the school from 1949.

On December 4, 1954, the school in memory of the recently deceased was President of the Bundestag and former pupil Hermann Ehlers in Hermann-Ehlers-school renamed.
