The Marzahn-Hellersdorf City Library is a public library system sponsored by the Marzahn-Hellersdorf District Office , Department for Further Education and Culture, Department of Libraries. The administration is located in the Freizeitforum Marzahn at Marzahner Promenade 54. The library has a media inventory of around 300,000, which were borrowed around 1.3 million times by 546,000 visitors in 2018. In addition, the library organized over 2200 events, guided tours and exhibitions during the same period.

history

1979-1990

The roots of today's library go back to the founding of the Mahlsdorf public library in 1905. They overlap with the history of the Lichtenberg city library through the reorganization of the districts and city districts . The Marzahn City Library was founded in 1979 by taking over the libraries in Mahlsdorf, Kaulsdorf and two libraries in Biesdorf and the Lichtenberg City Library. On October 3, 1980, the reconstructed Kaulsdorf library at Heinrich-Grüber-Straße 20 was reopened. On July 1, 1982, the Erich Weinert Library (→ Erich Weinert ) at Helene-Weigel-Platz 4 was opened with 31,000 media. The library had the first Artothek in Marzahn with 135 pictures. After the Biesdorf adult library had moved from Köpenicker Straße 1 to Biesdorf Castle , the opening took place on February 14, 1983. Several children's libraries were created during the 1980s.

On June 3, 1985 the Fontane Library (→ Theodor Fontane ) was opened in the new building area Marzahn-Ost, Brodowiner Ring 16 with an initial inventory of 19,000 media units and on August 15, 1986 the Ehm-Welk-Bibliothek (→ Ehm Welk ) in 2. 1991-2000

2001-2020

The main library was named "Mark Twain" in 1997. On January 1, 2001, the Marzahn and Hellersdorf districts merged to form the Marzahn-Hellersdorf district. This gave the Mark Twain library the status of a district central library (BZB) “Mark Twain”, and the Ehm Welk library became the central library “Ehm Welk”.

The 2000s saw the closure of several libraries. In 2002 the Biesdorf children's library and the Konstantin Simonow district library closed, the holdings of which were donated to the Bad Schandau city library , which was badly damaged by the flood . In 2003 the “Horst Bastian” district library, the “Heinz Lüdecke” district library and the Stendaler Strasse district library closed. In 2004 the district library "Heinrich von Kleist" closed due to demolition work on the Havemannstrasse building. 17b. On June 3, 2005, the reading café opened on the 3rd floor of the “Mark Twain” district central library. The Mahlsdorf district library at the Kuhnaustr. 6 closed in 2005 and opened on January 16, 2006 in the B1 Center, Alt Mahlsdorf 24–26. In 2011, the district central library "Mark Twain" was closed for seven months due to fire protection renovation, installation of a passenger elevator and renewal of the toilets. In 2014, the cooperation agreement between the Marzahner Tor housing cooperative and the Marzahn-Hellersdorf City Library Association was signed. V., which is based on a close cooperation with the district central library "Mark Twain".

In 2013, the library and Konrad Umlauf from the Institute for Library and Information Science at the Humboldt University in Berlin created a new library concept that weighs up resources (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities) and risks.

In the district central library "Mark Twain" there is a monthly writing workshop for pupils from the age of 11 and separately for adults. The library offers space for exhibitions and regularly organizes discussion groups such as literary coffee chats, the literary breakfast series or the Live at Kleist event series in the Heinrich von Kleist library.

media

The library has a stock of around 290,000 media, including DVDs, Blu-Rays, conventional and electronic games, and audio books. 400 paintings and graphics are on offer in the Artothek. The inventory also includes 9,000 foreign-language media (English, Vietnamese, Spanish, Russian, French, Arabic).

The music library in the district central library has 7500 sheet music for almost all instruments and ensembles, scores, piano reductions, instrumental schools, rock and pop songbooks and jazz sheet music, 16,000 DVDs, 6000 music books on classical or popular music, 2287 music DVDs and Blu-rays as well as 28 Music magazines. Over 40 different musical instruments such as guitars, ukuleles, recorders, percussion instruments, saxophones, an electric violin and others can be used or borrowed on site in the practice room. The library also has a special collection dedicated to the life and work of the composer Kurt Schwaen (1909–2007), who has long lived in the district .

The library has numerous workstations, several Internet PCs, four laptops with Internet access and free WLAN access.
