The town church of Schiltach in Schiltach in the Black Forest , Baden-Württemberg is one of the largest Protestant churches in Baden .

description

It was built from 1839 to 1843 after the fire in the old Gothic church. The foundation stone was laid on October 22, 1839, the inauguration on April 25, 1843. It is 49 m long, 24 m wide, has a ridge height of 27 m, the church tower is 54 m high. The architect Heinrich Leonhardt was in charge of construction.

The sandstone building is carried out in the Byzantine style. Inside the church there are columns on three sides of the room, which are connected with round arches . The pillars support a circumferential gallery . On the long sides there are two rows of windows one above the other.

The interior of the church is unadorned, strict, sober, simple. A round stucco arch with a surrounding vine frieze decorates the back wall of the chancel. The original pulpit was also located there .

In 1858 the Grand Duke of Baden donated a second pulpit with beautiful wood carvings during a visit to Schiltach . This should improve acoustic intelligibility and reduce overstraining of the preacher. The old pulpit was then only used for the New Year's Eve service , which is why it was also called the New Year's pulpit . It was removed during the renovation in 1981 and is now on the gallery. A large painting of Christ above the New Year's pulpit was painted over.

The parish includes Schiltach with a feudal court and Reichenbächle , whose residents also had to pay for the costs. Due to the need to save money, many decorations were dispensed with. After completion of the construction and inauguration, there were finally foreclosures , so that the city of Schiltach declared bankrupt . However, the district office refused to declare bankruptcy and so the town of Schiltach and the then independent municipality of Lehengericht had to pay off their building debts for decades.

The original pews wooden benches could accommodate 1,400 visitors, it was replaced in 1981 against chairs. At that time the parish numbered 4,500 souls, because of the growing industrial development one expected an increase in the number of believers.

organ

The organ built by the Heintz company in 1981 occupies the space between the stucco round arch with the grapevine frieze. It has 40 registers on three manuals and a pedal with a total of 2835 pipes .
