Dan Colen

Dan Colen (* 1979 in Leonia , New Jersey ) is an American artist who lives and works in New York City . His works include painted sculptures that seem to follow primitive models, as well as paintings inspired by graffiti on a wide variety of materials and installations .

Life and works

Colen graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design in 2001 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA). His first exhibition was in 2002 at the Rivington Arms gallery in Manhattan . In 2003 further group exhibitions and a solo exhibition at Rivington Arms in New York followed.

In Cole's installation Secrets and Symbols, Smoke and Scissors: My Friend Dash's Wall in the Future from 2004, his friend Dash Snow's pin board , which is modeled from Styrofoam, was shown. The artist copied all the pictures, photos and other things as exact replicas that Snow had impaled in his apartment. The object measures 269 × 287 × 15 cm.

In 2005 Colen took part in the Armory Show in New York and showed the objects Bridge Freezes Before Road and Interstate in New York galleries . In 2006, several group exhibitions of his works followed, for example at the Whitney Biennial in New York, Fantastic Politics at the National Museum in Oslo , USA Today at the Royal Academy of Arts in London, Axis of Praxis at the Midway Gallery in Minneapolis , Minnesota and at the Villa Manin near Udine in Italy. In the same year Colen's Secret and Symbol ... was shown by Deitch Projects in New York and by Peres Projects in Los Angeles . Further solo exhibitions were at Peres Projects in Berlin with No Me and at the New York Gagosian Gallery , here with Potty Mouth, Potty War, Pot Roast, Pot is a Reality Kick . His work Untitled (Vete al Diablo) , a 182 × 211.9 cm high polyurethane block smeared and scribbled with oil paints on a 30.5 cm high wooden base, was also created in 2006.

In 2007, Colen's 198.1 × 172.7 cm oil painting on canvas entitled Bird Shit was created .

Colen's first major solo exhibition since 2003 was held at the Gagosian Gallery on 24th Street in the Chelsea district of Manhattan, entitled Poetry, in September and October 2010. The artist collected traces: an upturned wooden half-pipe for skateboarders, an old brick wall from Connecticut , overturned Hells Angels motorcycles , the artist himself had glued chewing gum and confetti on a canvas.

Colen lives and works in New York City.
