The city park in Strzelce Opolskie ( Groß Strehlitz ) is a park laid out in 1832 by Count Andreas Renard based on the English model .
history
Andreas Renard became the owner of the Groß Strehlitz estate in 1815. Enthusiastic about the English landscape gardens that he had seen during his studies in England, he wanted to create an equally beautiful garden in front of his castle . Therefore, he commissioned his gardener Schmidt to create a corresponding design and sent him to study in England. When he returned in 1832, he began to implement the project, which took almost thirty years to complete.
Flora in the park
In the park, especially domestic grow deciduous trees and ornamental plants : white and black poplars , silver and mountain maples , swamp oaks , horse chestnuts , beeches , summer linden , hornbeam , ash , magnolia , forsythia , lilac , and buckthorn . There are also some conifers (three-hundred-year- old yews , Douglas firs , Weymouth and Swiss stone pines , firs ) and non-native ornamental trees ( ginkgos , maple-leaved plane trees , tulip trees ).
Buildings and objects in the park
Around 1837 Count Andreas began building a chapel in the park. The building also served as the family's mausoleum . After the transition from Silesia to Poland in 1945, the badly damaged chapel was torn down in the 1960s and the dead were reburied from the mausoleum in the cemetery at St. Barbara's Church.
In 1840, the count had a lookout tower built, which was to be a present for his wife. The building known as the Ischl Tower is located in the southern part of the castle park.
Many other buildings and objects were built in the park, including an orangery , a greenhouse for pineapple plants, a classical temple , a pheasantry and a statue of the goddess Ceres . With the exception of the pheasantry buildings, they no longer exist today. On January 21, 1945, when Soviet troops left Groß Strehlitz, they set the town and the castle on fire. The park was also devastated back then.
