history

April 5, 1900: “1. German finish in XX. Century "on the racetrack on the Kleine Bult , organized by the Hannoversche Rennverein and" recorded with Görz - Anschütz'scher Klapp-Camera "

Long before the construction of the town hall, the Kleine Bult area in front of the railway line to Braunschweig was used by the Hanoverian racing club as a race track for public horse races from 1868 .

It was not until shortly before the First World War that the site was designed in 1913 and 1914 under the name “Stadthallengarten” in the manner of a spa facility according to plans by garden director Hermann Kube and coordinated with the city hall architects Paul Bonatz and Friedrich Eugen Scholer . In June 1914 the town hall and the newly laid out garden with a long water basin and light fountain were inaugurated with a music festival.

In 1933 the area was used for the “Annual Show of German Garden Culture”. In the Second World War , the town hall burned down after the air raids on Hanover , the park was destroyed and initially used as garden land after the war.

From April 21st to October 31st, 1951, the first Federal Garden Show took place on the grounds of the town hall . The entire exhibition area was about 21 hectares and thus much smaller than that of the federal garden shows of later years. In 1951 around 1.6 million visitors were counted in Hanover.

Today's facility largely corresponds to its former appearance and is a listed building . Herbaceous beds and rhododendrons as well as the rose garden with around 140 varieties have been preserved. In 1963/64 the large water basin was renovated according to plans by Erwin Laage , the fountain garden was created and the terraces were redesigned. In 1974 a high-rise hotel was built in the entrance area of the city park, which in 1980 was combined with the city hall and exhibition buildings to form the Hanover Congress Center .

A special attraction is the 400 square meter Japanese garden with tea house , a gift from the Japanese metropolis, created in 1996 as part of the city partnership between Hanover and Hiroshima .

Until 2014, the city park was the venue for the annual summer bivouac , a garden festival of the 1st Armored Division .
