Stanisław Barańczak (born November 13, 1946 in Poznan , † December 26, 2014 in Newton ) was a Polish poet, translator and literary scholar. He also wrote under pseudonyms such as Barbara Stawiczak , Feliks Trzymałko & Szczęsny Dzierżankiewicz , Hieronim Bryłka , JH , Jan Hammel , Paweł Ustrzykowski , SB , Sabina Trwałczańska and Tomasz Niewierny .

Life

Stanisław Barańczak is one of the most important poets of the Nowa Fala ( New Wave ) alongside Ryszard Krynicki . After graduating from high school in 1964, he studied polonics at Adam Mickiewicz University in his hometown of Poznan, where he received his doctorate and taught in 1969 on literary theory. At the same time he worked in the editorial offices of the underground magazines Zapis and Krytyka as well as Polish exile magazines. As a co-founder of the Committee for the Defense of the Workers , he was sentenced to probation and banned from publication.

In 1981 he emigrated to the USA and in the same year was appointed professor of Slavic literatures at Harvard University . As a result of Parkinson's disease , he had to give up his chair in 1997. In 1983 he co-founded the Paris-based Zeszyty Literackie ( literary notebooks ) and from 1986 to 1990 editor-in-chief of The Polish Review ( Polish Review ). Until recently he worked for the bimonthly magazine Teksty Drugie ( The Other Texts ).

Barańczak translated works by Ossip Mandelstam , Joseph Brodski , John Donne , William Shakespeare , Emily Dickinson , Andrew Marvell , Philip Larkin , James Merrill , Robert Frost , Charles Simic and other poets into Polish. He also did a translation of the award-winning fantasy novel A Wizard of Earthsea by Ursula K. Le Guin . In 1972 he was awarded the Kościelski Prize , in 1999 he received the Nike Literature Prize , the most important literary award in Poland, for the volume of poems Chirurgiczna precyzja ( Surgical Precision ) .

The children's book author Małgorzata Musierowicz is a sister of Stanisław Barańczak. He died at the age of 69 in his home in Newtonville, a neighborhood in the Boston suburb of Newton.
