Ryszard Krynicki (born June 28, 1943 in the Windberg camp , St. Valentin , German Reich ) is a Polish poet, translator of German poetry and publisher.

Life

Ryszard Krynicki was born as a child of forced labor in a camp . He grew up in Gorzów Wielkopolski , as he used to point out, in a house from which the German residents had been evicted .

Krynicki is one of the most important representatives of contemporary Polish poetry and, along with authors such as Stanisław Barańczak and Adam Zagajewski, belongs to the so-called “New Wave” or “Generation 68” of Poland. Krynicki studied Polish Studies in Poznań . In 1975 he was a co-signer of Memorandum 59, a text that protested against the planned changes to the constitution of the People's Republic of Poland , which is why he was banned from printing from 1976 to 1980. In 1981 he was the editor of the Solidarność trade union newspaper in Poznań. In 1989 he founded the publishing house a5, in which u. a. Wisława Szymborska , Adam Zagajewski or Jakub Ekier publish. Krynicki translated works by Gottfried Benn , Bertolt Brecht , Paul Celan , Reiner Kunze , Nelly Sachs , Georg Trakl and other German poets into Polish. Krynicki is a member of the Saxon Academy of Arts and the Polska Akademia Umiejętności in Krakow .

Ryszard Krynicki lives in Kraków with his wife Krystyna.
