Stanislaw Karnkowski
Stanisław Karnkowski (born May 10, 1520 in Karnków , † June 8, 1603 in Łowicz ) was bishop of Kujawia from 1567 to 1580 and since 1581 Archbishop of Gniezno and thus Primate of Poland . He made a major contribution to the re-Catholicization of Poland.
Life
He studied in Krakow , Padua and Wittenberg between 1539 and 1549 . He received his doctorate in Padua as Doctor iuris utriusque .
From 1550 he was secretary to the Bishop of Chełm . In 1555 he joined King Zygmunt II August as secretary . In 1558 he became a crown trainee. For a short time he switched to the church career as a canon in Gnesen . In 1567 he became Bishop of Kujawy with his seat in Włocławek . A year later he called a reform synod with the aim of introducing the principles of the Council of Trent . As the first bishop he founded a spiritual seminary in Poland in 1569 in Włocławek.
After the death of Zygmunt II August, he spoke out in favor of Henri de Valois during the first interregnum . After his dismissal he stood up for Stefan Báthory in the second interregnum .
From 1581 he was Archbishop of Gniezno and thus Primate of Poland. As such, he promoted the Polish translation of the Bible by the Jesuit Jakub Wujek .
After the death of King Báthory in 1586 and the renewed Interregnum, he officiated as Interrex (Poland) and thus headed the state in the transition period. In the upcoming free election, Karnkowski supported the later King Zygmunt III. August Wasa because he was considered a strict Catholic.
As archbishop he founded further seminaries in Kalisz and Gniezno with the aim of the Counter Reformation . He has convened several synods and promoted the Jesuit order . He was also active as a preacher and author as well as a diplomat in the counter-Reformation sense. As a primate he was instrumental in the recatholization of Poland-Lithuania.
