Stary Dsedsin ( Belarusian Стары́ Дзе́дзін / Stary Dsedsin ; Russian Ста́рый Де́дин / Staryj Dedin , other German variants are Altes Dsedsin and Altes Dedin ) is a village in the eastern part of Belarus . It has about 200 inhabitants and is located in the Rajons Klimawitschy in Mahiljouskaja Woblasz . Stary Dsedsin is located on the right bank of the Ostjor River , five kilometers from the border with the Russian Federation . The Ivazewitschy - Babruysk - Krytschau railway is also five kilometers away to the south .

Name origin

According to local folk legends, the name of the place originated from the word "dsed" , in Belarusian old man , since according to tradition the first inhabitant of this place was 125 years old. Other sources claim that the name comes from the word "dsedsina" , which was used in the Middle Ages and stands for a certain type of feudal property in which land ownership is passed from grandfather to grandson. At first it was in the middle of an estate that encompassed a few neighboring villages. After a new settlement of the same name was built next door, they began to be called Stary (Old) Dsedsin and Novy (New) Dsedsin . These names have survived to this day.

Village history

Excavations show that the first inhabitants lived here as early as the Stone Age . A few thousand years ago this area was settled by Finno-Ugric tribes, as evidenced by the Finno-Ugric origin of the name of the river Ostjor. The first Indo-Europeans appeared here around the 2nd millennium BC. BC, coming from the south over the Dnieper , the Sosch and along their tributaries. They were the ancestors of the modern Baltic peoples. The first Slavic ethnic groups in this area were the Radimitschen , who lived in the 8th – 9th centuries. Immigrated from the south in the 18th century. Relics of the Kriwitschen , from another Slavic tribe that populated the northern area , were also found in the vicinity . In 1926 a number of Radimitschen burial mounds were examined , with objects from the 10th – 13th centuries being examined . Century found.

Dzedsin's treasure (see below) was buried here at the end of the 10th century, which suggests that there used to be a settlement here. However, this alone is not enough to designate this exact find as Stary Dsedsin's origin. Nevertheless, 985 was adopted as the symbolic founding date of the village. In 2010 the 1025th anniversary was celebrated. The actual settlement called Dsedsin was first mentioned in documents from the 16th century. Archaeologists discovered court remains from the 14th to 18th centuries. Century

In the 12-14 In the 18th century this area belonged to the Principality of Smolensk and then became part of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania . After the Moscow-Lithuania Wars began, Stary Dzedsin was next to the new border with Russia and suffered constant hostilities between these principalities for the next two centuries. 1740–1744 the village was in the event horizon of the Krytschaus peasant uprising.

In 1772, after the first division of Poland-Lithuania , Stary Dzedsin fell to the Russian Empire .

During the First World War and the Polish-Soviet War , it came close to the front line, but was spared from the war.

In 1924, Dzedsin became part of the Belarusian Soviet Socialist Republic .

During the Second World War , Stary Dsedsin was captured by the German Wehrmacht in August 1941 and recaptured by the Soviet Army in September 1943. 138 residents were killed in the war.

Local traditions

The villagers keep their centuries-old traditions. There is a folk ensemble called "Astranka", which is run by Halina Brykawa and is named after the Ostjor river. The ensemble members collect the local folk songs and present them. Scholars from the University of Leningrad came here to hear and write down these songs. Stary Dzedsin is also known for its pottery and weaving traditions, which Vera Zerenzjewna Stalyarowa continues.

The village is also famous for an ancient rain cry custom . During the drought, women “plow” the river and sing songs that used to be used to call the rain spirit. This custom has very deep pagan roots.

Dsedsin treasure

Dsedsin became famous across the country after one of the oldest treasures in Belarus was found here.

In 1926 the farmer Traphim Hudkou plowed his land and came across a pot of old coins . Ales and Pawel Prudnikau wrote an article about it in the local newspaper. Soon after, scholars from the Academy of Sciences of the BSSR came and sent the coins to Minsk . The exact analysis found that the coins were buried between 980 and 985. 201: The bowl 204 coins were Kufic Dirheme two denarii and a Byzantine Miliaresion . The dirhems found were minted in Antioch on the Orontes , Baghdad , Hamadan , Isfahan , Balkh , Samarkand , Bukhara and other places. It is possible that this treasure belonged to a wealthy merchant and was buried at this point, because there was a junction on the route from the Varangians to the Greeks .

The treasure was exhibited in the Belarusian State Museum, but has been lost since World War II.

In the summer of 2010, a memorial was placed on the site of the discovery at the entrance to the village.
