Stebbins ( Tapraq in the Yupik language or Tapqaq in Inupiat ) is a place located in the Nome Census Area of the US state Alaska with the status of City with 572 inhabitants (2014).

geography

Stebbins is located on the south bank of Norton Sound and forms the northwest side of Saint Michael Island , on the east side of which is the village of Saint Michael . Upstream is the Stuart Island . The distance to Unalakleet in the northeast is around 90 kilometers. The Yukon Delta National Wildlife Refuge begins in the south .

history

In 1778, James Cook sailed the Bering Sea and anchored in Shaktoolik on Norton Sound. After a few days he sailed a short distance, anchored again and named the place "Stephens Point" in honor of Philipp Stephens, a member of the Admiralty . The Eskimo population living there earned their livelihood primarily from hunting, including walruses , elk and caribou, as well as from fishing for herring , for example . In the early 20th century , the place was renamed Stebbins. According to local reports, Stebbins was easier to pronounce than Stephens for the Eskimos.
