Hobby horse polo

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hobby horse polo is a mixed team sport that is played on hobby horses . Similar to other Polo variants, such as canoe polo , bicycle polo , camel polo , elephant polo , golf cart polo , Segway Polo , Autopolo and Yakpolo , it uses the Polo ground rules , but also some own rules. Hobby horse polo is child's play in the classic polo regions. A version that emerged from a joke is only played by a few teams in Germany and Switzerland, but has often been the subject of media reports.

origin

In this representation from the Tristram Shandy , the hobby horses are not kept quite properly

Hugh van Skyhawk, an Indologist and professor of Islamic studies in Mainz and Islamabad , describes hobby-horse polo played by young boys as part of the traditional Gindnifest (harvest preparation) ceremony in Hispar . Hobby polo, a sport that was created in Mannheim in 1998, started out of a champagne mood and served as a mockery of the upper ten thousand in Heidelberg-Neuenheim . In 2002 the First Electoral Palatinate Polo Club was founded in Mannheim . There are only a few teams and tournaments in different cities in Germany, but the sport has often been the subject of media reports.

In 2013 the Grütlihüuler Guggenmusik from Allen winds ( Baar ) organized the first Swiss hobby horse polo. The Swiss variant also has some special features.

regulate

The aim of the game is to score goals for your own team. The gates are traditionally marked with bar stools; but it can also field hockey gates are used. The players score points by putting a small, soft baseball into the opposing goal with a polo stick. Each game starts with both teams standing in line behind their own goal and the ball in the middle of the field. At the command of the umpire ( umpire ) "Polo go", the teams gallop on top of each other, the bat in one hand and the hobbyhorse between the player's legs in the other. It is not allowed to kick or stop the ball.

A game lasts six 6-minute chukkas (halves). Each team consists of six players (depending on the size of the field and the interest in the game). The minimum size of a field is 30 meters long and 15 meters wide. The 'last man' rule implies that the last player standing in front of the goal is in charge of the goal. The clubs should be stable and are often taped to the hammer-club connector.

It is generally recommended that you hit the ball and not other players. Fouls or errors in galloping or failure to follow the referee's decisions will be punished with penalty sherries , which must be drunk immediately. In addition to sherry from schnapps glasses, vodka , bread drink or Jägermeister are also prescribed, depending on the referee's taste. The German rules also allow trotting or hobbling under the influence of alcohol, but only under a ministerial requirement derived from a Monty Python sketch and walking gag : "It has to look extraordinarily stupid." This in strange contradiction to the claims of individual teams, athleticism and speed go hand in hand this sport with the grace and elegance of the unity of rider and horse .

Helvetisms

The Swiss rules for throw-ins, penalties and game interruptions are based on classic football. There are no penalty sherries, there are free kicks for fouls, the winning team has to neigh when goals are scored. After the traditional keepers of the Swiss cavalry from the Zug Cavalry Association took part in the first Swiss tournament, riding boots were allowed, but spurs were explicitly forbidden, and the production of horse droppings by horse and rider was also excluded.

Düsseldorf award ceremony

At the Hobby Horse Polo Championships in Düsseldorf , the winner's trophy is “not a cup, but a cheesecake ”. This pays homage to the special award ceremony at the famous Indianapolis 500 race .
