The Stefan-Schatzl-Hütte was a wooden refuge of the Austrian tourist association Naturfreunde , Salzburg section , located in the northern part of the Tennengebirge in the Salzburg region . The hut has been privately owned since around 2009 and is no longer available for overnight stays.

location

The small hut is located in the clearing of the former Nesselbergalm on the forbidding and lonely northern flank of the Tennengebirge . It is located at 1340  m above sea level. A. Höhe at the foot of the Knallstein and high above the Lammer valley with the village of Scheffau am Tennengebirge . The little known and not very often visited base is run as a self-catering hut and catered for at least on summer weekends, when drinks are also available. It is a good starting point for mountaineers, who can cross plateau and climb peaks in the northern Tennengebirge from here, but it is also a worthwhile destination for hikers.

history

Stefan Schatzl (1891–1977) and Franz Schober from Hallein , both enthusiastic supporters of the Tennengebirge, met by chance in the summer of 1924 on the half-ruined Nesselbergalm and decided to create accommodation for mountaineers from it. A long-term lease contract was then negotiated with the landowner from Vorderscheffau and, after hard work, the converted hut was opened on October 31, 1926. Stefan Schatzl was most involved in this, he stayed there as often as possible as a hut warden, because of his tireless efforts the hut got his name. In 1938 the hut was confiscated and closed, only in January 1946 did the friends of nature get their hut back, whereby it was taken over again by Stefan Schatzl. Two years later the hut was renovated and expanded, and it was reopened on August 21, 1949. In 1959, Stefan Schatzl gave up the hut for health reasons, but took part in the anniversary celebration at the age of 84 on the occasion of its 50th anniversary.
