Stefan EG Burdach

Stefan EG Burdach (* 1952 in Berlin ) is a German pediatrician , oncologist , cancer researcher and university professor . His scientific focus is on malignant sarcomas in children and adolescents, cell and gene therapy .

Career

Burdach received his doctorate in 1980 from the University of Cologne . His specialist training took place from 1978 to 1983 at the children's hospital in Cologne. He then spent research stays at Harvard University , Stanford University and with Edward Donnall Thomas at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle , where he trained in stem cell transplantation . In 1989 he completed his habilitation in Düsseldorf . In 1997 he was appointed to a professorship for general pediatrics at the Martin Luther University in Halle-Wittenberg .

In 2003 he became a professor at the Chair of Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine at the Technical University of Munich . He is Director of the Clinic and Polyclinic for Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine at the Klinikum rechts der Isar and chief physician at the Children's Clinic in Munich Schwabing . In July 2020 he was also appointed Affiliate Scientist at the British Columbia Cancer Research Institute .

Burdach is the author of over 500 publications with over 7,000 citations (Web of Science). He also acts as a reviewer for the German Research Foundation , the Helmholtz Association , the Wilhelm Sander Foundation , the German Cancer Aid , the German Children's Cancer Foundation and the German José Carreras Leukemia Foundation .

  • 2009: Kind Philipp Prize of the Society for Pediatric Oncology and Hematology in the Stifterverband for German science for work on stem cells and cancer mechanisms.
