Stefan Talmon

Stefan Talmon (born January 22, 1965 in Pforzheim ) is a German - British international lawyer .

Life

Talmon studied law in Tübingen and Munich . He received a Master of Laws from the University of Cambridge . In 1995 he received his doctorate with a dissertation on the subject of "Recognition of Governments in International Law: With Particular Reference to Governments in Exile" as a " Doctor of Philosophy " at the University of Oxford . The second state examination in law in 1997 was followed by a habilitation in 2002 at the Eberhard Karls University in Tübingen on the subject of “Collective non-recognition of illegal states. Basics and consequences of an internationally coordinated sanction presented using the example of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus ”and the award of the title“ Master of Arts ”at the University of Oxford in 2003 . On July 28, 2008, Talmon was appointed Professor of International Law at the University of Oxford. In the 2011 winter semester he accepted a position at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn , where he teaches international law and is also the curator of the Bonn Legal Journal .

In addition to his academic work, he works as a barrister in a London law firm. He has appeared before the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague and advises governments, public institutions and multinational companies on international law matters.

In the case of the Turkish politician Doğu Perinçek , who was the first person in Switzerland to be held accountable for denying the Armenian genocide and who then took this decision to the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR), Talmon represented Turkey as the third party In favor of Perinçek.

In the proceedings of the Kurdish HDP politician Selahattin Demirtaş against Turkey before the ECHR in Strasbourg, Talmon is again representing Turkey.
