Stefan "Stevie" Wimmer (born January 13, 1969 in Munich ) is a German writer and journalist .

Life

Wimmer passed his Abitur in 1988 at the Karlsgymnasium in Munich-Pasing and then studied Romance studies , German and ethnology at the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität in Munich , before going to Mexico City in 1997 on a doctoral scholarship . A year-long strike at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México was the decisive factor in abandoning his doctoral studies and devoting himself entirely to journalism. It was at this time that the first short stories that were broadcast on Bayerischer Rundfunk were written. After his return from Mexico he worked for several years as an editor for various men's magazines.

Since 2009 he has been producing features and reports for Swiss radio , WDR , NDR and ORF .

Wimmer became known to a wider audience through his novels The 120 Days of Tulúm (2005) and The King of Mexico (2008). Although his books are characterized by rough humor and a burlesque, almost comedy-like plot, they have been surprisingly well discussed in the feature section.

Wimmer himself sees his antiheroes - often outspoken desperados - in the tradition of the Spanish picaresque novel , whose underdog protagonists hold up a mirror to the corrupt society. The genre of American screwball comedy also exerted a strong influence on Wimmer, according to his own statements (for example, The King of Mexico is dedicated to the brothers Peter and Bobby Farrelly ).

In addition to his writing activities, Wimmer has also published a historical CD on the Mexican bolero genre .

Prizes and awards

In 2010 he was awarded the German Radio Prize for his three-hour radio feature on the Mexican bolero, Long Night: My Life Belongs to You .

In the winter of 2011 he was invited as a guest of honor to the International Book Fair in Guadalajara , together with Herta Müller , Wladimir Kaminer , Doris Dörrie and others.

In 2013 his report on the agave wine pulque was voted one of the best reports of recent years by the editors of the Süddeutsche Zeitung and published in book form ( Welt. Reise. Stories. Süddeutsche Zeitung Edition).
