Steffen Christmann

Steffen Christmann (born January 8, 1965 in Neustadt an der Weinstrasse ) is an expert in wine law and has been running the A. Christmann family winery in the Neustadt district of Gimmeldingen since 1996 . Since 2007 he has been President of the Association of German Predicate and Quality Wineries (VDP). The city of Neustadt appointed him to one of its twelve wine parliamentarians in 2012 on the occasion of the 180th anniversary of the Hambach Festival .

family

Christmann grew up in his parents' winery , which was founded in 1845 and is run by Christmann in the seventh generation of the family. He is married and has four children with his wife Daniela.

education and profession

After graduating from high school in 1984 at Kurfürst-Ruprecht-Gymnasium Neustadt , Christmann studied law in Heidelberg . In 1994 he was admitted as a lawyer . At the same time, he completed his training in viticulture at the DLR Rheinpfalz in Mußbach , which he completed in 1995.

Christmann first joined a law firm, where he mainly worked on the complex of agricultural and wine law . In 1996 he took over his parents' winery, which has its roots in the 17th century. In 2003 he switched to organic viticulture using the biodynamic method and modernized wine production. In addition, he opened a new estate restaurant in an old wine cellar from 1575 , the name of which "Spinne" refers to the sea ​​spider as the most famous wine location in Gimmeldingen.

At the beginning, Christmann's company comprised 17 hectares of vineyards , now there are 21 in the area surrounding the winery in the districts of Gimmeldingen, Königsbach , Deidesheim and Ruppertsberg .

In June 2007 Christmann was elected President of the VDP. In September 2016, the specialist journal Weinwisser, which belongs to the Konradin media group , declared him its Wine.Personality of the Month .

Awards

Wines

Christmann is one of the top producers in the Palatinate . For example, the trade journal Weinwirtschaft awarded 91 out of 100 points for a 2011 Königsbacher Idig Pinot Noir dry from Christmann , and Parker awarded 95 out of 100 points for a 2014 Königsbacher Idig Riesling dry Großes Gewächs . The same wine was rated 94 points by the Falstaff wine magazine . Falstaff awarded this score to a total of six Christmann wines.

Companies

In November 2017, the Christmann winery with operator Steffen Christmann was honored with one of two other floor tiles on the "Path of the Wine Legends" in Neustadt's Friedrichstrasse pedestrian zone , which goes back to a suggestion by the local publishing house Meininger .
