Thalau is a district of Ebersburg in the Fulda district in East Hesse, Germany.

The locations Altenhof, Hühnerkropf, Frauenholz, Unter- / Mittel- / Oberstellberg belong to Thalau.

geography

Thalau with its districts Altenhof, Frauenholz and Stellberg lies at the foot of the Hohen Kammer with the Schluppwald. The place is embedded in a gentle hollow between the Fulda and Döllautal. It is surrounded by smaller hilltops that offer a view of the Rhön Mountains.

In addition, the forests and meadows around Thalau are rich in natural beauty. As a special feature of the flora, daphne grows in hidden locations in spring and rare orchids in summer. While the fields and meadows of the "Talaue" lie on a nutrient-rich loess-clay cover, the species-rich mixed forests that have formed on the red sandstone are characterized by a large abundance of mushrooms and berries in late summer.

Thalau is climatically favored by its location between two valleys. With an average annual temperature of 8 degrees Celsius, Thalau is, similar to the Fulda basin, in one of the mildest climatic zones in East Hesse. Since 1975 the village has been a "state-approved resort".

history

Thalau was first mentioned in a document on June 13, 1273. An original document is available for this first mention, which is kept under the documents of the Blankenau monastery in the Hessian State Archives in Marburg .

According to their wording, Giso von Steinau, with the consent of his wife and heirs, waives any right of action against the goods previously owned by Albert von Erthal in Treisbach in favor of the Blankenau monastery. Cunradus de Talowe is mentioned among the document witnesses. The surname Talowe refers to the place previously written as "Talowe", in which there must have been a ministerial family at that time who, as a representative of his village, performed equestrian service with the Fulda abbots on their trips to court and army.

For many decades the Lords of Ebersberg ruled Thalau, where they owned large estates. Later Thalau belonged until 1802 to Fuldischen Office Weyhers, then by the year 1866 to Bavaria.

In 1577 there were 25 households in Thalau. In 1633 when Fulda took possession of the Hessian Landgrave Wilhelm V, the village had 49 households. Today the population of Thalau is around 1,100.

As part of the regional reform in Hesse , on December 31, 1971, the previously independent municipality of Thalau was incorporated into the new municipality of Ebersburg.

The hamlet of Sybillenhof belongs to the Altenhof location. The farm was once owned by the Michaelsberg provost in Fulda and passed into private ownership through inheritance in 1789. At the same time, at the request of the new owner, Johann Leipold zu Altenhof, he was allowed to set up an “economy” in his home. Descendant Kaspar Leibold sold his "Gastwirthschafts-Gerechtigkeit" to the local farmer Anton Storch in 1853 for 500 guilders. Five years later, Storch was given permission to distill brandy. In the period that followed, the inn with a “beer brewery, schnapps distillery and bowling alley” developed well and, despite its remote location, was soon widely known and popular.

There are 17 clubs in Thalau. The last big joint activity was the 725th anniversary celebration. Care and preservation of nature, care of singing, musical education, cultural activity, physical training are the main areas of focus that the clubs have made their main tasks. Special mention should be made of the signposted circular hiking trails with a total length of 160 kilometers, which the tourist office created and the sports facility of the football club with a new grandstand.

The church in Thalau

Two of the oldest works of art are in the church in Thalau. There is a late Gothic Vespers image of the Mother of Sorrows from the 15th century and a baroque wooden figure of "Jesus on the Wies" from the 16th century, which is a replica of the miraculous image in the famous pilgrimage church of Wies near Oberammergau.

The most valuable Thalau works of art are four baroque wooden sculptures that originally stood in the famous Marienkapelle in Würzburg and that came to the Rhöndorf when Thalau was still part of the Kingdom of Bavaria to decorate the church, which was built between 1858 and 1860. There are colored wooden figures of St. John, John the Baptist, as well as St. Boniface and St. Kilian. Saint Boniface has a story of its own because the baroque sculpture was originally a Saint Nicholas, the patron of the Main boatmen, when it was in Würzburg. In the Rhön, the three "balls" from the Gospel book were quickly taken from him and a dagger stuck into them, and a magnificent "Bonifatius" was ready.

There are several wayside shrines in the area , the oldest dating from 1712.

Culture

The Carneval Club Thalau organizes several festivities every year, including two external meetings and the Rose Monday parade.

The Café am Dales now and then offers cultural events such as concert evenings, readings or the Rhön spinning room, which is often open in summer and where Rhön customs are maintained and preserved.

The Rhönklub branch association Thalau has been organizing a memorial service on every 2nd Sunday in October since 1973 in the pilgrimage church of Maria-Ehrenberg.

On the first weekend in September, the Rhönklang Music Association invites you to its Oktoberfest.

Every year, the fair takes place on the Sunday after All Saints' Day . The fair is organized and carried out by the 1986 Thalau Boys' Association . This association consists of over 90 exclusively male residents of Thalau.

Large numbers of visitors from the region also experience the “Potato Days” and the slaughter festival, which, in addition to sporting attractions, offers all sorts of distinctive delicacies from the area.

Sports

The football sports club 1950 Thalau organizes its sports festival every year on Whitsun.

fire Department

The oldest association is the Freiwillige Feuerwehr Thalau eV, founded in 1878. The Thalau fire brigade consists of the association, which is committed to the maintenance of customs and the common good, and the operations department, which as a public institution is not subordinate to the association, but to the community fire inspector commissioned by the community board. Around the clock, 40 fire brigade members do their work on a voluntary basis and without pay.
