The Stemonuraceae are a family within the flowering plants (Magnoliopsida).
description
The species in the family are woody plants: trees and shrubs . The alternate, simple leaves are often stalked and leathery. Stipules are missing.
They are usually dioeciously separated sexes ( diocesan ). Zymous inflorescences are formed. The small, non-fragrant, radial symmetry flowers are four to five-fold (rarely up to seven-fold). The sepals are more or less free. The petals are fused. There is only one stamen circle with strong, often noticeably hairy stamens (filaments). The carpels are a top permanent ovary grown, with a wide, sitting scar. There are drupes formed.
Systematics and distribution
The taxa have their home in the tropics. The center of biodiversity is the Pacific region from Southeast Asia to Queensland (Australia). A few species are found in the Neotropic , on the Indian subcontinent and in Africa including Madagascar .
Some authors place these taxa in the Icacinaceae Miers family. The Stemonuraceae family contains about twelve genera with about 80 species:
-
Cantleya
Ridl. : There are only two types:
- Cantleya corniculata (Becc.) R. Howard : It iswidespreadin Malaysia and Indonesia and supplies weather-resistant wood with the trade name Dedaru .
- Cantleya johorica Ridl. : It was described from the Malay Peninsula.
- Codiocarpus R.A.Howard : The only two species are in Indomalesien common.
- Discophora Miers ( Syn .: Kummeria Mart. ): The fouror sospecies are distributed from Costa Rica to Bolivia .
-
Gastrolepis Tiegh. : It contains only one type:
- Gastrolepis austrocaledonica (Baill.) R. Howard : It occurs only in New Caledonia .
- Gomphandra Wall. ex Lindl. : The 33 or so species are distributed from tropical Asia to northeastern Australia .
-
Grisollea Baill. : There are only three types:
- Grisollea crassifolia Schori, Lowry & GESchatz : It was first described in 2013 and only occurs in eastern Madagascar .
- Grisollea myriantha Baill. : It occurs only in Madagascar and the Comoros .
- Grisollea thomassetii Hemsl. : It occurs in the Seychelles only on Mahé and Silhouette .
-
Hartleya Sleumer : It contains only one species:
- Hartleya inopinata Sleumer : It occurs in New Guinea .
-
Irvingbaileya R.A. Howard : It contains only one species:
- Irvingbaileya australis (C.White) RAHoward : It is only found in the Australian state of Queensland .
-
Lasianthera P.Beauv. : It contains only one type:
- Lasianthera africana P.Beauv. : It is common in tropical West Africa.
- Medusanthera Seem. (Syn .: Tylecarpus Engl. ): The five to seven species are distributed from Malesia to the western Pacific islands.
- Stemonurus flower (Syn .: Urandra Thwaites ): The approximately 30 species are common in Indomalesia.
-
Whitmorea Sleumer : It contains only one species:
- Whitmorea grandiflora Sleumer : It only occurs in the Solomon Islands .
