The Stena Spirit (formerly Stena Scandinavica ) is a RoRo ferry of the Swedish shipping company Stena Line , which is used on the Baltic Sea .

history

Construction, commissioning and use

As Stena Scandinavica in Kiel (2006)

The Stena Spirit was laid down in 1983 as Stena Germanica at the Lenin shipyard in Gdansk (Poland). Due to delays in construction, it was not completed until the end of 1987. It was renamed Stena Scandinavica in September 1986 . The ship was delivered on February 10, 1988 and sailed under the Swedish flag with its home port in Gothenburg . From February 29th, 1988 she sailed as Stena Scandinavica together with her sister ship Stena Germanica (today's name: Stena Vision ) almost continuously every day on the 441 km long overnight route between Kiel and Gothenburg .

In January and February 1999, 80 passenger cabins were dismantled in favor of a larger vehicle deck as part of a stay in the shipyard. Another renovation took place in 2006.

In order to expand the capacity of the heavily used route between Kiel and Gothenburg, the shipping company decided to replace the two ships, which are now over 20 years old, with larger and newer ones. On September 1, 2010, her sister ship Stena Germanica was replaced by the Stena Germanica III . In order to compensate for the capacity gap between the larger Stena Hollandica and the smaller Stena Scandinavica , the Stena Freighter was used in parallel with the Stena Scandinavica . On April 20, 2011, the Stena Scandinavica was finally replaced by the Stena Scandinavica IV on the Kiel-Gothenburg route after a delay of several months and then modernized again in Gothenburg. Since the names Stena Germanica and Stena Scandinavica are traditionally reserved for ships on the Kiel-Gothenburg route, it was renamed Stena Spirit on June 22, 2011 . She was brought under the flag of the Bahamas with her home port Nassau .

Since June 27, 2011, the Stena Spirit has been sailing the route between Gdynia (Poland) and Karlskrona (Sweden) together with her sister ship already in use there .

Incidents

  • On April 9, 1998, a fire broke out in the passenger area while driving in the direction of Kiel.
  • On May 17, 2012, while casting off in the port of Gdynia, the ship collided with a container crane, causing the crane to collapse completely and injuries to three dockers.
  • In August 2016, a fire broke out in a truck on board the ferry.

Equipment and ship technology

The Stena Spirit is 176 meters long, 43.5 meters high, 30 meters wide and has a draft of 6.7 meters. It is measured at 39,169 GT. On twelve decks (including four car decks ) the ferry offers space for up to 1,700 passengers as well as 600 cars or 80 trucks. The crew is 130 people.

The main engines are four marine diesel engines from the Sulzer Z49 / 48 series, which were built under license by Zgoda in Poland. The sixteen-cylinder V-engines have a combined output of 29,420 kW and act in pairs on two variable-pitch propellers via gears and shafts . The speed of the ship is 22 knots , the stopping distance is 600 meters. For energy supply are five eight-cylinder - auxiliary diesel installed. The ship has two bow thrusters with an output of 1,100 kW or 1,500 hp each and two stabilizers .

Further sister ships

Originally the Stena Line ordered four ships: the Stena Germanica (hull number 494/1), the Stena Scandinavica (494/2), the Stena Polonica (494/3) and the Stena Baltica (494/4). Due to delivery delays by the shipyard in the construction of the first two ships, the last two orders were canceled again during the construction phase and a largely completed hull was sold. The ship intended as Stena Polonica was completed in Greece and sails today as El. Venizelos at the Greek shipping company ANEK Lines . The other ship, intended as Stena Baltica , was sold to the Greek shipping company Regency Cruises , which renamed it Regent Sky and wanted to use it as a cruise ship. For this purpose, it was extended in 1994 in a Greek shipyard. After ceasing business activities, it was sold to Aliağa in Turkey for scrapping in July 2011.
