Stepan Mailowitsch Marjanjan (born September 21, 1991 in Dinskaja , Krasnodar region ) is a Russian wrestler of Armenian descent. In 2018 he became world champion in the Greco-Roman style in the weight class up to 63 kg body weight
Career
Stepan Marjanjan started wrestling as a teenager in Russia. He belongs to the Army Sports Club Krasnodar and was or is trained by Alexej Ivanov, Alexander Komov, II Ivanov and BB Kanajew. The 1.68 meter tall athlete weighs between 60 kg and 65 kg.
He was already very successful as a junior and won his first international title in July 2007 when he became Junior European Champion (Cadets) in the weight class up to 46 kg in Warsaw. In 2008 he repeated this success in Daugavpils, but in the weight class up to 50 kg. In July 2010 he became Junior World Champion (Juniors) in Budapest in the weight class up to 55 kg. In 2011, however, he was unable to repeat this success. He lost at the Junior World Championships in Bucharest in the same weight class in his first fight against Victor Ciobanu from Romania just 3: 4 points. Since Ciobaru did not reach the final, he was eliminated and only came in 15th place.
In 2012 he took 3rd place at the Russian championship in the weight class up to 55 kg behind Mingijan Semjonow and Nasir Mankijew . In 2013 he repeated this success in the same weight class, but this time behind Ivan Tatarinov and Bekchan Mankiev . From 2012 to 2014 he took part in several international tournaments, but was not used in any international championships. The greatest success in those years was his victory in January 2013 at the "Ivan Poddubny" tournament in Tyumen, where he won ahead of Beckchan Mankiev, Aras Chalilow and Andrei Zoy, all from Russia.
In 2015 Stepan Marjanjan was the Russian runner-up in the weight class up to 59 kg behind Ibragim Labasanow , but ahead of Mingijan Semjonow, his old competitor. He was then used at the 2015 European Games in Baku in this weight class. He justified the trust placed in him and became European champion there with victories over Tobias Fonnesbek, Denmark, Roman Amojan , Armenia, Elman Muchtarow, Azerbaijan and Soslan Daurow, Belarus. In September 2015 he represented the Russian colors in Las Vegas for the first time at a world championship for seniors. But he had bad luck there, because after a victory over Tian Qiye from China, he lost his next fight against Kim Seung-hak from South Korea, whereupon he was eliminated and only came in 13th place.
Also in 2016 he took 2nd place behind Ibragim Labasanow in the Russian championship in the weight class up to 59 kg, but was not considered for the international championships of this year by the Russian Wrestling Association.
In 2017, Stepan Marjanjan became the first Russian champion in the weight class up to 59 kg, ahead of Mingijan Semjonow, Ivan Tatarinow and Ibragim Labasanow. In March 2017 he was also part of the Russian team that won the World Cup in Abadan. He was used there twice, defeating Schanserik Sarsenbijew, Kazakhstan and Christoffer Krämer, Germany. In August 2017 he was back at the World Cup in Paris. In the weight class up to 59 kg he won there over Etienne Kinsinger , Germany and Erik Torba, Hungary, but lost in the quarter-finals against Ken'ichirō Fumita from Japan. Since this reached the final, he was able to continue in the consolation round and secured a bronze medal with victories over Justas Pekavicius, Lithuania and Kanibek Scholchubekow , Kyrgyzstan .
After a mediocre start, he only finished 9th in the "Ivan Poddubny" tournament in Moscow in January in the weight class up to 60 kg, and 2018 turned out to be the most successful year in Stepan Marjanjan’s career. He switched to the weight class up to 63 kg and was in this weight class of Russian champions before Ibragim Labasanow, Roman Iwanow and Rustam Chutschbarow. He then won three important international tournaments, namely the "City of Sassari", the "Giwi Kartosija" & "Wachtang Balawadze" prize in Tbilisi and the "Ljubomir Ivanovic Gedza" tournament in Kragujevac. In October 2018 he won the world title in Budapest in the weight class up to 63 kg with victories over Katsuaki Endo, Japan, Rahman Bilici, Turkey, Krisztian Istvan Vaniza, Hungary and Elmurat Tasmuradow, Uzbekistan.
In April 2019, Stepan Marjanjan became European champion in Bucharest with victories over Michal Tracz, Poland, Justas Petravicious, Lithuania, Levani Kavjaradze, Georgia and Stig-Andre Bertge, Norway in the weight class up to 63 kg. The points ratio of 39: 3 in these fights in his favor testifies to his superiority. In June 2019 Stepan Marjanjan trained in the Olympic weight class up to 60 kg at the European Games in Minsk. He also won in this weight class with victories over Victor Ciobanu, Romania, Kerem Kamal, Turkey, Schora Abowian, Ukraine and Erik Torba, Hungary.
