Stepan Tymofijowytsch Poltorak (born February 11, 1965 in Wessela Dolyna , Ukrainian SSR ) is a Ukrainian officer and politician. He has been Minister of Defense of Ukraine since October 14, 2014 .

Poltorak was nominated as defense minister by the Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko on October 13 and replaced Valery Heletej in this position the following day . He was the fourth defense minister in Yatsenyuk's first cabinet . After the government was reorganized as a result of the parliamentary elections , he was one of the ministers whose posts were confirmed in the new cabinet . He was also able to maintain his post as defense minister after the cabinet reshuffle in April 2016 in the Hrojsman cabinet .

After the new President Volodymyr Zelenskyi took office , he announced his resignation on May 20, 2019. His successor in office was Andrij Sahorodnjuk on August 29, 2019 .

Career

Poltorak graduated from the Ordzhonikidze Commander-Officer College of the Ministry of Interior of the USSR in Ordzhonikidze and the Military Academy of the Armed Forces of Ukraine .

From 2002 he was head of the Academy of Troops of the Ministry of Interior of Ukraine in Kharkiv and since February 28, 2014 he was head of the troops of the Ministry of Interior of Ukraine . From April 15, 2014, he was Commander of the National Guard . He was promoted to Colonel General on August 23, 2014 . As defense minister, he wants to modernize the Ukrainian armed forces . He was promoted to Army General on October 14, 2015.
