Andrij Wassyljowytsch Taran ( Ukrainian Андрій Васильович Таран , scientific transliteration Andrij Vasylʹovyč Taran ; born March 4, 1955 in Frankfurt (Oder) , GDR ) is a Soviet - Ukrainian military and politician. The Lieutenant General a. D. of the Ukrainian Armed Forces is the 16th Minister of Defense of Ukraine.

Life

Youth and education

Taran's parents were members of the Soviet Armed Forces group in Germany and were stationed in Frankfurt (Oder) at the time of his birth.

In the 1970s, Taran graduated from the Kiev First Artillery School (now Ivan Chernyakhovsky National University of Defense of Ukraine ) specializing in military radio engineering. He then served in the Soviet Army . In the 1980s he graduated from the Kiev Air Force Academy of Air Defense with a degree in Combat Management . He was also trained at the Institute of International Relations of the Taras Shevchenko National University of Kiev and in the diplomatic service . From 1995 to 1996, Taran studied at the National Defense University in Washington, DC and received a Masters in National Resource Strategy.

After the independence of Ukraine

From 1992 to 1994 Taran worked in the Central Office of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine. He then moved to the Defense Ministry's main directorate for intelligence services. He worked for the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine as an expert in the Center for Strategic Planning and Analysis. From 1996 to 1998 he worked again in the Central Office of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine.

From 1999 to 2004 Taran was a military attaché at the Ukrainian Embassy in Washington, DC After that he worked until 2008 as head of the Ministry of Defense; then he was deputy chief of the military intelligence service. From 2011 to 2014 he was a representative of the Ministry of Defense in the delegation of Ukraine to the United Nations and from September to November 2015 he was a member of the subgroup for security issues of the Trilateral Contact Group on Ukraine (Ukraine, Russia, OSCE ) on the war in Donbas . From April to August 2015, Taran was the representative of Ukraine in the Joint Control and Coordination Unit (Ukrainian Спільний центр з контролю та координації, СЦКК Spilnyjzentr s kontrolju ta koordynaziji, SZKK from December 2015 to April 2016 ) for the implementation of the protocol he was appointed First Deputy Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. In 2016 he was retired from the armed forces of the Ukraine with the rank of lieutenant general for reasons of age.

Beginning in 2019 led Taran the election headquarters of presidential candidate Ihor Smeshko in the presidential election in Ukraine in 2019 . In the parliamentary elections in Ukraine in 2019 on July 21, 2019, he ran for the conservative party Strength and Honor in 24th place on the list, but did not become a member of parliament .

On March 4, 2020, Taran became Minister of Defense of Ukraine in the Schmyhal cabinet .
