Stephan from Bar

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Stephan von Bar (also Stephan von Metz ) († December 29, 1163 ) was Bishop of Metz from 1120 to 1163 .

Life

Stephan came from the House of Scarponnois and was the son of Dietrich von Mousson and Ermentrude of Burgundy, a daughter of Count Wilhelm I of Burgundy . He was destined for church service at an early age and raised by his maternal uncle, Guido of Burgundy, Archbishop of Vienne and later Pope Calixt II .

Stephan was elected primicerius of Toul in 1107 . After Guy of Burgundy was elected Pope in 1119, he made Stephen Bishop of Metz in 1120 . In doing so, he secured the approval of the Archbishop of Trier, Bruno, who was considered a skilled diplomat and influential advisor to Emperor Heinrich IV . The investiture controversy temporarily prevented the seizure of his diocese, for which Stephan only received the imperial confirmation from Heinrich V after the Worms Concordate had been concluded in 1122 . With the help of his brother, he had to fight back some worldly goods of his diocese to consolidate his authority and founded several churches and monasteries, including the Abbey of Notre-Dame d'Autrey.

Stephan von Bar took part in the Second Crusade in 1147 with his brother Rainald I the One-Eyed , Count von Bar, Mousson and Altkirch . During this time, Albero von Montreuil , Archbishop of Trier and previously Archdeacon of Metz, Toul and Verdun, administered the diocese of Metz .

Stephan was buried in the cathedral of Metz "iuxta chori".
