Stephen of Bourbon

Stephen de Bourbon (Stephen of Bourbon) and Etienne de Bourbon (* 1190 in Belleville , † 1261 in Lyon ) was a Dominican - Inquisitor of the 13th century. He was the author of the most important specimen collection for preachers , the so-called " Exempla " of this century: the Tractatus de diversis materiis predicabilibus (short: De diversis materiis predicabilibus ). Along with Jacques de Vitry , he was the most important religious storyteller in medieval France.

biography

Etienne de Bourbon was born in Belleville near Lyon at the end of the 12th century . From 1217 to 1223 he joined the Dominicans in Paris .

From about 1223 to 1250 he was preacher general , who developed his activities in many places, for example in the area of Lyon (which at that time formed part of the German Empire ), Bourgogne , Lorraine , Forez , the Massif Central , the diocese of Valence , the Roussillon , the Savoie .

Étienne de Bourbon became one of the first inquisitors. He wrote a catalog of the "errors" of belief. This list was reused by other inquisitors, such as B. by Bernard Gui in the 14th century in his Manuel de l'Inquisiteur .

Around 1250 he undertook to work out the Tractatus de diversis materiis predicabilibus . It contained over 3000 stories of various origins. The original manuscript is lost. One of the most important manuscripts of the 13th century, now kept in the Bibliothèque nationale de France , was found in the Bibliothèque of the Sorbonne , chained to prevent its theft.

Etienne de Bourbon died in 1261.
