The Stephansbrücke is a bridge on Brennerstrasse B 182 in Tyrol . It crosses the Ruetz near Unterberg in the municipal areas of Schönberg and Mutters before it flows into the Sill .
history
The 36 m high St. Stephen's Bridge , built from 1842 to 1846, is the largest preserved stone bridge in Austria . The foundation stone was laid by Archduke Stephan of Austria in 1843. At the time of construction, at 43.63 meters, it was the largest and widest single arch bridge in the monarchy and the third longest in the world. The construction was planned by the engineer Leonhard von Liebener and carried out under the architect Alois Haas . The massive semicircular stone arch is made of Höttinger breccia , which was brought to the construction site in large cuboids by horse and cart across Brennerstrasse from Hötting . The bridge in the late classical style is under monument protection (entries Mutters / Schönberg ).
In 1879 the vault cover was removed and replaced by a relief vault. Due to the heavy traffic, the bridge was heavily loaded and particularly attacked by road salt and was extensively renovated from 1993 to 1996 in coordination with the Federal Monuments Office .
