Stephen Cottrell
Stephen Geoffrey Cottrell (born August 31, 1958 in Leigh-on-Sea , Essex , England ) is a British Bishop of the Church of England . He has been Diocesan Bishop of Chelmsford , Province of Canterbury, since October 7, 2010 . On December 17, 2019, he was named 98th Archbishop of York . He will take office in June 2020.
Life
After studying at the Polytechnic of Central London and at the Seminar St Stephen's House in Oxford 1985 he was ordained . He began his church career as a curate in the London borough of Forest Hill and at a church in Chichester . Immediately prior to his appointment as bishop, he was canon of the cathedral of Peterborough .
On January 6, 2004, his appointment as Bishop of Reading, a suffragan bishop in the Diocese of Oxford, was announced after his predecessor, Jeffrey John , an avowed LGBT activist, withdrew his nomination. On May 4th, 2004 he received the episcopal ordination , which was confirmed by a letters patent . After his appointment as Bishop of Chelmsford in the Province of Canterbury on March 22, 2010, he was transferred to the Diocese of Chelmsford on October 6, 2010 and installed in his office on November 27, 2010 at Chelmsford Cathedral . On February 10, 2014, in his capacity as Bishop of Chelmsford, he became a spiritual lord in the House of Lords . He was officially inducted into the House of Lords on March 25, 2014, with the assistance of Peter Robert Forster , Bishop of Chester , and Tim Stevens , Bishop of Leicester.
Cottrell is a member of the Affirming Catholicism movement , which defends Catholicism within the Anglican Church and supports a campaign for the ordination of women . He is married and has three children.
