Dominic Edward William Murray Walker (born June 28, 1948 in Plymouth , Devon ) is a British Anglican clergyman and has been Bishop of Monmouth since 2003 .

Life

Walker was born to a Welsh mother and an English father. His mother's family came from Abertillery . Walker attended Plymouth College in Plymouth, Devon. He studied theology at King's College of the University of London . He graduated from Heythrop College, the University of London's Jesuit College, with an MA in pastoral theology with a focus on religious psychology . At Cardiff University , he also earned a Master of Laws degree in the subject canon law .

He was ordained a deacon in 1972 and a priest that same year . From 1972 to 1973 he served as an auxiliary vicar at St Faith Church in Wandsworth in the Diocese of Southwark . From 1973 to 1976 he was local chaplain to the Bishop of Southwark. From 1976 to 1985 he was the rector of St Mary Church in Newington , London . At the same time he was also the country dean of Southwark and Newington from 1980 to 1985 . From 1985 to 1986 he was pastor ( vicar ) at St Peter's Church in Brighton (with responsibility for the Chapel Royal) and at St John's Church in Chichester . At the same time he was from 1985 to 1986 responsible pastor ( Priest-in-Charge ) at St Nicholas Church in Brighton. From 1986 to 1997 Walker was Dean ( Team Vicar ) for the parishes of St Peter and St Nicholas , again with responsibility for the Chapel Royal, in Brighton. At the same time he was from 1985 to 1997 Land Dean of Brighton. He was also canon , honorary minister, and preanor at Chichester Cathedral from 1985 to 1997 .

He was ordained bishop on May 1, 1997 at Southwark Cathedral , London , and appointed bishop of Reading , Diocese of Oxford . He held this office until 2003. He has been Bishop of Monmouth in the Church in Wales since 2003 . In December 2002, Walker was elected Bishop of Monmouth to succeed Rowan Williams , who had been named Archbishop of Canterbury . Walker was officially inducted into office on March 29, 2003 at St Woolos Cathedral, Newport . Newport Cathedral is the official seat of the Bishop of Monmouth.

Within the Church in Wales , Walker is the bishop responsible for priestly formation and ordination.

Walker has been a member of the Anglican Order of the Oratory of the Good Shepherd (OGS) since 1983 . From 1990 to 1996 he was its superior. He is also a bishop visitor of a total of six Anglican orders, including the Society of the Sacred Cross (Tymawr Convent) and the Sisters of the Good Shepherd in the Diocese of Monmouth.

Walker has received awards from several universities. In 1993 he received an honorary doctorate as Doctor of Letters ( Hon DLitt ) from the University of Brighton . Since 2003 he has been Governor of the University of Wales at Newport.

Working in public

Walker is a believer in a theology of spiritual healing and inner liberation through prayer. In 1997 he published a book on the subject called The Ministry of Deliverance . He is chairman of the Healing Ministry Steering Group of the Church of England and was among the members that the 2000 A Time to Heal published -Report. He is the vice chairman of the Christian Deliverance Study Group .

Walker also worked hard on animal welfare . He has been Vice President of the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals since 2001 . In 2008 he was chairman of the Anglican Society for the Welfare of Animal . Currently (as of January 2010) he is also Vice President there.

In March 2008, Dominic Walker and Anthony Priddis , the Bishop of Hereford , called for changes in the health care system. Walker particularly criticized the rationalization of health care and the impact it would have due to the different health systems in Wales and England .
