Stephen Milling

Stephen Milling (* 1965 in Copenhagen ) is a Danish opera singer ( bass ).

Career

Born in Copenhagen in 1965, Stephen Milling studied singing at the Royal Danish Conservatory and has been engaged at the Royal Danish Opera in Copenhagen since 1994 . In the 1999/2000 season Milling made his debut as Rocco in Beethoven's Fidelio at Scala under the musical direction of Riccardo Muti . Shortly afterwards he appeared at the Seattle Opera as Fasolt in Das Rheingold and Hunding in Die Walküre by Richard Wagner . In Seattle he also sang Gurnemanz in Parsifal , for which he won the 2003 Opera's Artist of the Year Award. Milling had other engagements as König Marke ( Tristan und Isolde ) at the Seattle Opera, the Lyric Opera of Chicago and the Vienna State Opera , as Sparafucile ( Rigoletto ) at the Metropolitan Opera in New York , as Sarastro ( Die Zauberflöte ) at the Royal Opera , London , as well as Gurnemanz at the Vienna State Opera and as Rocco at the Gran Teatro del Liceu in Barcelona .

Stephen Milling also sang King Philippe in Don Carlos at the Vienna State Opera, Fafner in Siegfried and Narbal in Les Troyens at the Palau de les Arts Reina Sofía in Valencia with Valery Gergiev , Landgrave Hermann in Tannhäuser and Sarastro in Die Zauberflöte in the 2009/2010 season at the Royal Opera in Copenhagen , Gurnemanz in Parsifal at the State Theater in Stuttgart and the Verdi Requiem with Mariss Jansons and the Berlin Philharmonic in Berlin and Salzburg .

From 2015 to 2017 Milling sang the part of Hagen ( Götterdämmerung ) at the Bayreuth Festival . In 2019 he played Landgrave Hermann in the new production of Tannhäuser under the musical direction of Valery Gergiev.

Milling is married and has three sons.
