Heckman began ski jumping and cross-country skiing in 1982 after moving to Winter Park with his family . In 1991 he was the youngest jumper to win the US championship on the large hill. In 1992 he was then accepted into the national team. At the 1992 Winter Olympics in Albertville , Heckman started in individual and team competition. Together with Joe Holland and Tim Tetreault , he achieved eighth place in the team competition. In the individual he came in 37th. In 1993 he started in the Nordic Combined World Cup for the first time . In his first season in 1993/94 he reached 26th place in the overall World Cup ranking. At the 1994 Winter Olympics in Lillehammer , he reached 7th place with the team and 29th place in the individual. The following 1994/95 season was his most successful World Cup season. After several good placings, including his 8th place in Vuokatti his best individual result in the World Cup, he reached 14th place overall at the end of the season. At the Nordic World Ski Championships in 1995 in Thunder Bay , he and the team with the 4th place narrowly missed the medal ranks. At the beginning of 1997, Heckman had reached 9th place in the world rankings. He ended his career shortly afterwards with the start of the Nordic World Ski Championships in Trondheim in 1997 , where he again achieved 5th place in the team competition together with Dave Jarrett , Tim Tetreault and Todd Lodwick .
After the end of his active career, he finished his studies at the University of Colorado Boulder . In 1998 he received his degree in business administration and economics with summa cum laude .
